The Hon. M. Connelly, M.L.C., left on to-day’s express for Wellington. Advice lias been received that A.B. C. G. Martin, M.Sc,, of Otago University, has headed the list in the examination for sub-lieutenancies in the Royal Navy. Mr J. L. Passmore left for Wellington this morning. Mr G. Z. Bindley was a passenger on this morning’s express, bound for Wellington Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, was a passenger on this morning’s express. Mr C. Baker left for Christchurch by to-day’s express. Mr S. C. Ringrose left for Wellington this morning. Corporal W. L. Jones, of Palmerston, returned yesterday. Advice has been received that Corporal 15. A. Brockie and Bombardier Brockie are safe and well.

The appointment of Messrs H. A. Muldrew, A. L. Clark, A. H. Watson, J. M. Saville, and A. Lindsay as members of the Malicuo Domain Board has been gazetted. Mr W. Bowden, of Leith street, has received a cablegram from his son, Sapper G. J. Bowden, stating that he is safe and well.

Lieutenant C. W. J. Boult, R.N.Z.A., artillery instructor, Dunedin, left by the express yesterday to take up an appointment at Military District Headquarters, Christchurch. At last night’s meeting of the Mosgicl Borough Council - the mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstongo) made sympathetic reference to the death of an ex-coun-cillor (Mr H. Miller). A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed. In honour of three constables whose transfers have been announced, and to celebrate the recent marriages of three other constables, the Dunedin Police Social Club held a dance and social evening in the Railway Road Services Hall last night. Inspector W. E. Packer made the presentations, and the recipients were Constable H. 0. L. Hansen (promoted to acting sergeant and transferred to Christchurch), Constable J. P. Cuttance (transferred to Christchurch), and Constable 11. H. Watts (transferred to Oamaru). Constables L. 11. Blake, L. J. Grimwood, and E, W. Hammond were those who received wedding gifts. Mr C. H. Fastier, wlio for a number of years was manager of the Bank of New’Zealand at Helensville, retired at the end of January. Mr Fastier began his banking career in Dunedin, and later was employed in the Mosgiel, Timaru, Palmerston, Wellington, and Pahiatua branches. Before leaving Helensville he was entertained by the residents of the district, who presented him with a cheque for a substantial amount. Mr and Mrs Fastier were also the recipients of handsome gifts from the various organisations with which they had been associated, and from members of tho Presbyterian Church. They have taken tip their residence at St. Heliers, Auckland. Mr W. W. Allnutt, who has been appointed managfer _ of the Wellington branch of the Union Bank, joined the bank’s service in 1904 in Dunedin and served in many branches in different capacities till he succeeded Mr Porter as accountant at Wellington branch in 1925. In 1927 he opened, the bank’s Courtenay Place, Wellington, branch, and subsequently was appointed to the management in W'hakatane in 1932, to the post of senior sub-inspector in 1934, and to that of assistant inspector in 1939. At the end of 1940 he was transferred to Australia for a year’s experience and throughout 1941 relieved all inspectors and senior managers at the capital city branches in the Commonwealth. He was also attached to the general manager’s department in Melbourne for a short period, and has just returned to New Zealand to take up his new duties. Guests at the Excelsior Hotel include Major M. Lewis (Auckland), Mr C. B. Elsworth (Christchurch), Mr H. Felton (Cromwell), Mr and Mrs A. D. McLauchlan (Macraes Flat), Mr A. AitchLson (Palmerston). On the register at the Hotel Carlton are Mr and Mrs D. Lowrie (Hamilton), Mr (R. Owen (Wellington), Miss A. Archibald (Oamaru). Mr F. Girdwood. Mr A. McKenzie (Invercargill). City Hotel guests include Mr C. D. Irwin, Mr F. Crespin (Auckland), Mr A. Brunton (Wellington). Mr K. Chambers, Mr and Mrs C. R. Mitchell (Christchurch), Miss R. Blodorn (Timaru), Mr A. C. Moss (Oamaru), Mrs G. Eliot, Miss G. May (Roxburgh), Mr J. Price, Mr T. Laris (Invercargill), Mr W. IR. Christie (Balclutha).
