BINOCULARS REQUIRED
NATION-WIDE CAMPAIGN FOR LOAN, GIFT, OR SALE (ILA.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 24. In a nation-wide campaign which was launched to-day an urgent appeal is being made for binoculars and telescopes for the use of the armed forces. These are required most urgently, and the public is urged to give, lend, or sell them to the Defence Department. It is recognised that in many cases binoculars and telescopes are treasured possessions, perhaps having a sentimental as well as an intrinsic value, but in making them available for the national cause owners will surely find special satisfaction. Orders for the necessary numbers required have been placed overseas, but it may be some time before supplies come to hand. Supporting the appeal, the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) said to-day Jhat fee was sure that once ±Tjg need
was made known these instruments would be forthcoming from patrioticcitizens. They presented, he said, as a straight-out gift, as a loan for the duration of the war, or might be sold to the department at a valuation fixed by an expert trade valuer.! They should be taken or sent to the nearest post office, where a receipt would he issued. Mr Jones said that he entertained no doubt that the appeal would he successful, and, in view of the urgency of the matter, lie would ask that action he taken without delay.
