THIS MORNING AT WINGATUI Conditions were ideal for early workers at Wingatui, but about 9 o’clock there was a sudden change in. the temperature, and shortly afterwards heavy rain fell. No. 1 grass track (next the rails) was in good order for fast work, and the ■ trestles were placed several feet further in than on Thursday, thus providing a fresh piece of ground for galloping and making the distances covered slightly shorter. Dark Olga and the Paper Money—Scotch Wit filly in H. A. Anderton’s stable ran half a mile in 51 2-ssee. Pink Dart and Happy Feet took 54 l-ssec over the same task. Attorney was doing slightly better than Helpmate over five furlongs in 64sec. Boucant finished strongly over the same distance in 65sec. Withdrawal was eased up during the middle stages of a similar task, and finished strongly in 64 3-ssec. Gay Lancer, Great Swoop, Safe Light, and Hoiho Tinopai were companions over seven furlongs. After running the first furlong in 14sec they took Imin 19seo for the last six. Fifty yards from the post Great Swoop was in charge, but Gay Lancer finished very strongly, and was first past the post. Strip, who has tightened up as the result of his racing at Geraldine, was not extended to run half a mile in 53sec. A large number of horses were given from half to three-quarter-pace work. JOTTINGS To Ride Silver Lily. A. E. Didham has been engaged to ride Silver Lily in the Dunedin Guineas. Oldham won this race on Kinnoull in 1935 and on Silver Paper in 1928. The Stewards’ Handicap. Of the 45 horses nominated for the Stewards’ Handicap southern stables are represented by Secret Flight, Silver Lily, Sea Lady, Dark Flight, Hearth, and Boswell. Lord Nuffield. On Thursday morning Lord Nuffield’s, owner said he was still in the paddock, but he was exercising on the course this morning. His condition indicated that it would be some time before he was ready to race. Change of Gait. Echoist, a full brother to Lament, Discord, Resound, and Tyrone Lass, raced as a pacer at the Otago Hunt meeting, but at Methven this afternoon appeared as a trotter. A Trotting Derby Candidate. Sandiways went two solid faces at the Geraldine meeting, and should improve still further before Jie has to meet the best of his age in the Trotting Derby next month. Returning to Form. Enrich, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap and New Zealand Derby last November, indicated that he is returning to last year’s form by finishing second to Pay Roll at the Foxton meeting. Lost Money. Backers of Elusory on the place machine at the Foxton meeting had to accept a loss on their investments, though he was showing quite a remunerative price on the win totalisator. Not Starting. Moneybird, by Paper Money from Wingatui, one of D. J. M'Donald’s team, has 1 contracted a slight cold, and his owner, Mr R. Green, who was a visitor to the course this morning, has decided not to start him in the M'Lean Stakes next Saturday. Dunedin Spring Meeting. It has been decided to start the races each day of the Dunedin spring meeting at 12.30 p.m. For the convenience of Southland patrons the club' has arranged for a special train leaving Invercargill at 7 a.m. on Monday and returning leaving Dunedin at 5.35 p.m. Also Engaged at Ellerslie. Three New Zealand Cup candidates have been engaged in the Mitchelson Cup to be run over a mile and a-haif at Ellerslie next Saturday. They are Rakanui, who is top weight with 9.6, X2lb more than he has been allotted in the New Zealand Cup; Gladyney 8.13, 71b more; and Trig Station, 91b more. For Trentham. Slayer has been working well on his owner’s private track in view of a trip to Wellington this month. E. Leckie, who rode him in the Grand National, has been engaged to ride him in the Wellington steeplechases, and has been riding him in his schooling work. Conference Postponed. It is reported that owing to some of the larger clubs having made other arrangements for the working of the totalisators at their meetings, the conference of delegates from the Otago and Southland clubs to have been held in Dunedin next Friday has been postponed. Answer to Correspondent. “ I.C." —The Rules of Racing provide that in all handicaps, excepting those exclusively for two-year-olds, the top weight shall not be allotted less than 9.0, but it is left to the discretion of the handicapper to fix the minimum, provided, of course, that he does not go below the weights provided in the conditions attached to the races. The minimum weight provided in

the Trial and Novice Handicaps to be run at the Dunedin Spring Meeting is 7.7. The Winter Cup Winner. Treasurer has had an easy time of it since winning the Winter Cup, and is only doing light work at present. He will be racing e.t Rangiora on Labour Day and at the Motukarara meeting early next month. These outings should bring him up to racinjg form for the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Favours Iceland Spar. In the President’s Handicap on the second day of the Geraldine meeting Don’t Forget finished third,. under 8;10 and Iceland Spar 8.9 was seventh. In the Churchill Handicap to be run over a furlong and a-half longer distance next Saturday Don’t Forget will meet Iceland Spar on 11b worse terms. The extra distance will be all in favour of the latter. Busy Day for Owners. Next Monday will be a busy day for owners, as, in addition to' acceptances closing for the first day of the Dunedin Spring Meeting at 5 p.m., and at 9 a.m, principal handicaps and Canterbury Cup will close at the same hour, and at 9 a.m. nominations for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring fixture. Oamaru Trotting Meeting. The Oamaru Trotting Club will distribute £2,200 in stakes at its meeting to be held on Labour Day. The President’s Handicap, £4OO, class 4min 34sec, and Hannon Memorial Handicap, £450, class 2miu 46sec, are the principal events. Mr T. Marshall, of Invercargill, will be in charge of the starting barriers. Nominations close on October 13. To Ride Regal Fox, That accomplished horseman, A. E. EMis, is to go north for the spring meeting at Ellerslie, and has been engaged to ride Regal Pox in the Great Northern Guineas. The Foxbridge colt suffered a slight cold after the Avondale meeting, but he is himself again and working well. Accidental Occurrence. The adjourned inquiry into the cause of the falling of Irish Pearl in the first division of the Maiden Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday was concluded on Monday by the Judicial Committee of the Ohinemuri Jockey Chib. The committee found that the' occurrence was purely accidental and that there was no one to blame. The committee passed a motion of sympathy with the parents of the apprentice jockey M. Poole, who died in hospital on Sunday morning as the result of injuries received in his fall from Irish Pearl. The Monarch. When Piastre beat The Monarch into third place in the Carnarvon Handicap at the Fox ten meeting he was in receipt of 181 b over the mile and a-quarter. In the New Zealand Cup, the difference is only 41b. The Monarch, who was having his third start this season, was reported to be not quite ready, but carried bis 9.0 well into the straight, and only weakened over the final stages. He is a five-year-old" horse by Croupier from Kiltruda, and owned and trained by H. B, Lorigan. New Zealand Trotting Cup. Though 27 horses were eligible to be nominated in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, only 19 are engaged, and of these 13 will start off the limit. Unless the field is reduced the back markers will find a difficulty in getting through such a big line off the front. The first acceptance is due on October 16. New Zealand Cup Field. Thirty-five horses survived the first acceptance for the New Zealand Cup, including Serenata and Alserion, who are at present in Australia. The horses that dropped out are The Buzzer, Royal Lancer, Sir Cameron, Tidewaiter, Gayest Son, Kotua, Gay Parade, Merry March, Trig Station, Cherokee, Islay Downs, Craiglea, Southern Sail, Phyto, Kinkajou, Kathesbridge, Moderate, Battledress, Wharemanea, and Inform. It is interesting to note that of the 20 that have dropped out 13 were handicapped on the minimum.
