ANNUAL CROSS-COUNTRY RAGES CONTESTED BY 200 RUNNERS The King's High School held its annual cross-country races yesterday afternoon in ideal weather conditions, no fewer than 200 runners taking part—l3o in the senior event and 70 in the junior. Both races began in Main Avenue, then to Forbury Crescent, along Victoria road, as far as Forbury road, and along the sandhills, turning down Moreau street, and back to the starting point. The distance was approximately 2j- miles. The senior race covered part of the same course, but the runners proceeded from Victoria road along Bedford street, Norfolk street, along Cliffs road, on to the esplanade, and along the sandhills, turning down Moreau street to the finishing point. ■ The senior race resulted in an impressive win for G. W. McGregor, whpse time was 17miri 12sec., J. A. Cox .being second and B. McKernan third. The winner took charge early in the proceedings and forged ahead on the homeward journey to win fairly comfortably. The sealed handicap went to L. A. Davis, who was in receipt of 3min from the scratch man, McGregor. A. Howley ran a solid race to win the junior event in 14min, second place going to W. A. Godby and third to J, K. Cain. W. A. Godby (Imin 15sec) won the sealed handicap. Mr S. R. Crimp was superintendent, Mr O. J. Begg starter, Mr E. Hayes and Dr B. H. Howard timekeepers, and Messrs R. Tuck and G. Chisman judges. THE RACES. In the junior race Lennox went to the front in the early stages, but Howley was always handily placed. At the end of Victoria road the leaders were well bunched, with Howley, Tomkins, Trott, Kenyon, Cain, Scott, Lennox, and Richards prominent. Howley improved his position going along the sandhills, and, finishing well, won by 10yds from Godby, who had moved up fast over the last three-quarters of a mile, Cain being a similar distance back third. C. W. McGregor and W. McLauchlan led the senior field along .Victoria road and on to Bedford street, with Webb, Cormack, Carson, and McKernon lying handy. McGregor took charge coming down Cliffs road, opening up a lead of about 100yds from McKernan and Webb. McGregor maintained his position, and, finishing full of running, won by-60yds from Cox, who also moved very solidly over the last mile. McKernan was another 120yds hack third, followed by Webb, McLaren, and Hickman. TROPHIES PRESENTED, The trophies were presented following the race, and the rector (Mr D. S. Chisholm) expressed keen appreciation of the action of those athletic officials who showed their interest by attending the race every year. He specially mentioned Mr B. R. McKernan, who had attended each race from its inception. Mr McKernan had been coach of the New Zealand team at the Empire Games in Sydney and was a vice-president of the Civil Service Harriers. Mr H. J. C. McKenzie (president of the Civil Service Harriers), Mr A. J. Holloway (president of the Caversham Harriers), Mr G. L. Austin (the New Zealand marathon champion), and Mr A. Melville (a former president of the Civil Service Club) were also present. Mr Melville presented the prizes, and congratulated the boys on the way the races had been contested. It was pleasing to find that every one of the 200 starters had completed the course. Mr Melville congratulated the winners and gave the boys some good advice on training in general, advising them to exercise care to see that they did not overdo things between the ages of 14 and 21.
