Lord Nuffield, winner of three races out of 13 starts last season, is still enjoying a. spell in the paddock. Fillies Predominate. In this year’s field for the M’Lean Slakes eight of the 15 for which forfeit was made are fillies. In the last seven contests fillies have won six times. Two-year-old Top Weight. Damask, with the top weight of 8.5, should bo included in the handicaps for the Longbush Nursery event at the Masterton meeting next week, Spanish Lad. Spanish Lad, who has not raced since February, will be recommissioned shortly. Ho will probably go into F. \V. Ellis’s stable, and will race in the colours of Mr H Mason. Dunedin Guineas Candidates. Bascule (Foxbridge—Rose Latour) and Willow Wood (Cricket Bat—Winsome Hind) are two Dunedin Guineas candidates that have been galloping well at Eiccartcn lately. Yesterday morning they ran seven furlongs in Imin 29 2-ssec, the last three iu 38 l-sscc. Schooling Well. Colonel Rouge, who has 9.3 in the hurdle race on the opening day of the Dunedin Spring Mooting, has been schooling well on the Invercargill tracks, and yesterday morning was accompanied over the last four of six by Anglo-French. Will Not Race. The Cheviot Trolling Club has decided not to race during the war, and also to invest £l5O in National Savings. Members’ subscriptions during the war are to be placed to the credit of National Savings. Judge Appointed. Mr Karl Scott has been appointed judge for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next Boxing Day. Mr Scott -had his first experience of judging at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s spring meeting. George’s Strong Team. 1 T R. George won the New Zealand Cup last year with Serenata, and she is again engaged, having been weighted at Bst 21b, while in addition to Piastre, the stable has Beau Ciel (7st 41b) and Phyto (7st) in the race. Change of Quarters. The Heddon Bush trainer, F. J. Boyle, is now located at Invercargill, where he has Platform and Ageratum, The former is reported to be in good order for the Trial Handicap to bo run on Saturday week. Last season Platform had three starts, but finished unplaced in each. Smart Two-year-olds.

Chestnut Glow and Foxhavcn, two Riccarton candidates for the M’Lean Stakes, have been putting up some fast sprints over three furlongs. Yesterday morning Chestnut Glow recorded 36 3-sseo and Foxhaven 37 l-ssec. They appear to be the most forward of the youngsters engaged in the half-mile classic.

Should Turn the Tables. In the hurdle race to be run at Wingatui next week Merry Simon will meet Night Dress on 121 b better terms than on the first day of the Geraldine meeting, where Merry Simon appeared to ho unlucky to be beaten by a very narrow margin. On paper Merry Simon should be able to turn the tables next week.

Working Weil. Doubleack, winner of last year’s Dunedin Cup, will meet Iceland Spar, who finished second, on 61b better terms in the Churchill Handicap on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. He has been working well since running third at the Otago Hunt meeting, and will bo ridden at Wingatui bv J. L. Strathern.

South Canterbury Spring Meeting. For its spring meeting, to be held on October 18 the South Canterbury' Jockey Club has issued a programme giving £1,245 in stakes. The Tcschemaker Handicap carries a stake of £3OO, but as the placo money totals £9O the winner will not incur a penalty for the Hew Zealand Cup. Nominations close next Monday at 9 p.m. The New Zealand Cup Favourite.

Iceland Spar is reported to be doing all that is asked of him in his work at Riccarton, and rapidly nearing his best racing condition. Yesterday morning he ran a mile in Imin 44 4-ssec, the last half in 50sec. A win for Iceland Spar at the local meeting next week would not entail a penalty in the New Zealand Cup, in which he is favourably handicapped at 7.11.

Methven Cup. The good performance recorded at New Brighton last month by Oxford Scholar will probably cause that gelding to start favourite in the Methven Cup to-morrow.

Both the Methven and New Brighton tracks are grass circuits, but at the latter the going was very heavy, whereas a firm track is almost assured at Methven to-morrow.

Erlick Surprises. The success of 'Erlick in the Poland Cup at the Ohinemuri meeting came as a complete surprise, as he had not shown any form since last February, and had a sequence of 19 unplaced runs. Only two of the 14 runners were less supported than Erlick, Lou Rosa for a place and Vitement for a win. Erlick outstayed Kilcash in a hard finish, and paid'more than half a century, besides double figures for a place. Dunedin Guineas Candidate.

Palfrey continues to please the track watchers at Riccarton, and yesterday morning he beat Stabilise over sis furlongs in Imin 16 l-ssec. It was the fastest six of the morning. Palfrey has been engaged in the open six-furlong race on the first day of the local meeting, and with 8.1 has been nicely treated. He is already the logical favourite for the Dunedin Guineas, and a win on the first day would cause him to start at a very short price in the classic on the second day. Taurangi. Added interest was given to the Spring Handicap at Hastings yesterday by the apperance of Taurangi, top-weight in this year’s New Zealand Cup. She carried 9.6, 61b more than her impost in the Cup, and beat all but the winner, to whom she was conceding 311 b over a mile run in Imin 40sec. Taurangi finished second in last year’s Cup, and was then treated at Riccarton for blood trouble. It is good to know that this mare has returned to form, and as she is one of tho proved stayers in this rear’s Cup she will now come into favour for the big two miles handicap. Taurangi is a six-year-old inaro by Beau Pore from Barbacan, an Australian-bred mare by Top Gallant from Columbia, by Spearmint. Dunedin Jockey Club.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held yesterday, when there were present Messrs A. C. Hanlon (chairman), L, C. Hazletl, A. Barnett, C. N. Draper, A. P. Greenfield, W. Garrett, J. A. Gow, B. S. Irwin, L. .1. Potter. D. M. Reid, A. N. Smith, and F. Tyson. Arrangements were, completed for the club’s spring meeting, which will be opened on October 11.
