CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —1 noticed in last evening's ‘ Star ’ that the chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board stated that it was difficult tor conscientious objectors to answer the question, “ Why do you pay your taxes? ” There is no difficulty at all involved. If the Government forcibly takes one's money away that is no reason why one should then join it in doing what one considers evil things. If, however, the chairman is not satisfied with the logic of this, then, as one cannot leave New Zealand for a desert island, starvation to death is the only consistent course, and so we should have the absurd position that to establish sincerity the crime of suicide would have to be attempted. The appeals of some appellants who pay taxes have been allowed.—l am, etc., R.L. October 2.
