NAVY LEAGUE

OTAGO BRANCH MEETS The monthly meeting of the Navy League (Otago branch) was held in tho ward room of tho Sea Cadets Headquarters, Dowling street, yesterday, the president, Mr J. Sutherland Ross, being in the chair. It was reported that a donation of £7O had been received from the Townswomen’s Guild, and it was resolved that this money bo expended on purchasing comforts for men of the Royal Navy and mercantile marine. The wool report for the month stated that the monthly quota of comforts had 'been sent to Wellington. About GO dozen chklrens’ garments have been received and packed ready to be sent to England for the families of seamen. Honey, marmalade, butter, barley sugar, and chocolate have been purchased and are being packed and sent for distribution to these families at Christmas time. Mrs Gerald Ferguson has taken charge of the spinning, and it was resolved that an endeavour he made to secure a larser room for this work. Commander Fraser reported on the activities of the sea cadets and on the progress made in preparing the training ship Waireka, so that the cadets could spend their week-ends on board. Further cadets are to bo examined within the next month for entry into tho Navy, and it has been decided to hold a recruiting night on October 14. when all bovs whose names are on tho waiting list will bo paraded and examined. It is resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to the Women’s Club for tho loss they had suffered through the death of Miss Nicolson.
