BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS

AT NATIONAL DAFFODIL SHOW OFFICIAL OPENING BY DAVOR The combined spring show held by the National Daffodil Society and the ’ Dunedin Horticultural Society was officially opened by the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) yesterday afternoon before a large gathering of growers and other members of the public. Prior to the official opening, the vicepresident of the National Daffodil Society welcomed guests. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of the president (Sir Heaton Rhodes) from the opening of a show which, judging by the number of exhibits, must constitute a record. Every season had its own beauty of flowers, but of them all the spring flower was the brightest, stated the Mayor. The National Society, he continued, was founded 15 years ago, and during that time had done a great deal towards the development of the beautiful blooms they saw there. The development of the modern daffodil came from the old jonquil, narcissi, and the ’common daffodil. Mr Allen, declaring the show open, congratulated both societies on the excellence of the show.
