SITTING OF APPEAL BOARD MEDICAL AND DENTAL STUDENTS EXEMPTED At a sitting yesterday afternoon of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, comprising Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. (chairman), and Messrs J., Price and H. Hodgson, a number of appeals on behalf of medical and dental students were heard, appeals in each case being adjourned sine die. It was stated by the chairman that the position of students had been reviewed, and second-year students were now entitled to ask for exemption. ' This called for the following comment from Mr A. N. Haggitt (Crown representative) : The position is, then, that these students have commenced their studies since the outbreak of war. The Dean of the Medical School (Dr C. E. HerCus) stater! the period of studies of the various appellants, which ranged from sixth year down to third year. Only three woro second-year students in the Medical School and one in the Dental School. The modjcal students Were: Owen L. Thomas (fifth year), Arthur M. Collin (fourth year), David J. Woodhouse (fifth year), Hamish Grant Bremner (fifth year), Arthur Oswald Gilmour (fourth year), Frederick John Gruar (fourth year), John W. Mandeno (fifth year), Gerald L. Gleeson (fourth year), Edward F. C. Hofford (fourth year), Keith R. Lothian (fifth year), Patrick B. Fox (fourth year), Victor Shirle Land (sixth year), Noel B. Freeman (fifth year), lan L. Wilson (second year). Dental School students, for whom Professor R B. Dodds appeared were: Henry C. Prins (fourth year), Henry R. Geddes (fourth year), Archibald R. F. Maclean (fourth year), John C. S. Tonkin (fourth year), Frederick Akel (second year), and Alfred C. Peters (second year). OTHER APPEALS. Dr F. H. Smirke gave evidence in support of the appeal of Frederick Noel Pastier, M.Sc., aged 21, on tire ground of public interest. The appeal was lodged on behalf of the University of Otago. Dr Smirke stated that the appellant had experience in research work and that tiic view of the University was that he would be irreplaceable at the present time. The appeal was adjourned eine die, the appellant to serve in the Homo Guard. Archibald Ewing Scorgie, sheep farmer, of Deep Stream, appealed on the ground of public interest on behalf of an employee, Douglas Alston M'Lean. After bearing .the evidence of the appellant regarding the working of his run the board adjourned the appeal sine die.
