SOUTH TRUNK RAILWAY
PUSHING ON WITH NORTHERN SECTION (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 30. Work is being pushed on with all speed, and shifts and gangs are being doubled wherever possible in an effort to have the northern section of the South Island Main Trunk railway from Blenheim to Kaikoura in operation by the last week in December, the scheduled date for the completion of the section. The only work to be done is the actual laying of the rails for 21 miles and the’ ballasting of" the track for about 28 miles, and there seems to be little doubt that the line will be open by the time expected. Whether the claim that the southern section to Oaro will be opened by January next can be fulfilled is, however, doubted in some quarters. The section to be completed is short, about live miles, but the route is through difficult country, mostly hillsides, loose shingle, and limestone, and much difficulty has been caused by slips and washouts.
