TERMS NOTES

[By Recorder.] Eon. F. Phillipps has been called up for the duration of the war, and left for Burnham last Saturday. He is attached to the No. 1 Otago Company with the rank of quartermaster sergeant. Otago tennis will suffer a groat loss by his departure. He has been a most consistent worker for a great number of years, and his work on the O.L.T.A. has been outstanding. His organising ability and sound judgment will be greatly missed. His services when the association’s courts were laid down at Logan Park, and his keen interest in the association properties at all times perhaps deserve special mention, but what made Mr Phillipps so invaluable was his consistent work throughout the years in all matters pertaining to the welfare of tennis. He was elected an honorary life member of the O.L.T.A. some yearn ago, which speaks for itself, as this honour is not 'lightly given. As as small token of their esteem, members of the executive presented Mr Phillipps with a pipe and tobacco pouch, and ho will also carry with him the. good wishes of all tennis players. The first meeting of the new executive of the O.L.T.A. was held last week, and the various sub-committees were appointed. The president (Mr E. C. Stuart Falconer) had given this matter considerable thought, and a woll-balancod team to take charge of the various activities has been appointed. Finance will need special' consideration this year, and a strong committee, consisting of Messrs E. C. Stuart Falconer (convener), A. M’Millan, E. Ruben, and W. J. Lovell, has been appointed, and tennis players can therefore be assured that this important matter is in good hands. Mr T. Brookes has again been appointed the association’s coach, and clubs have been requested, as usual, to nominate two promising players, who will receive coaching at Logan Park. on two evenings in the week. The decision of the executive te invite the winners and runners-up of the

primary school tennis tournament to take part in the association’s coaching scheme is an excellent one, and these promising players should quickly benefit under Mr Brookes’s tuition. Messrs F. L. C. Scrivener and L. Facer were appointed a sub-commit-tee to control the coaching arrangements. Secretaries' are reminded that entries for the interclub matches and nominations for players selected for coaching close with the ‘secretary of the association on Monday next, October 6.

M’Millan Cup.—Saturday, November 15, has been set aside for this popular annual Yankee tournament. This important event will be referred to later in these notes. Soldiers’ Parcels. —The Kaituna Club is holding a Yankee tournament on Saturday next, October 4, and the proceeds will be spent on parcels for ex-members on military service. . A minimum entry fee of Is 6d for each player will be charged, but balls will be provided free of cost by the club, and the prizes for the winners have been donated. Post entries will be received on the courts up to 1.30 p.m., and male members of other clubs are cordially invited to enter. Members are very enthusiastic, and already several donations of soldiers’ parcels have been received. The prizes will include silk stockings, and it is therefore obvious that invitations to members of other clubs must be restricted to male members. The Kaituna Club is to be congratulated on this worthy effort, and other tennis clubs who are sending soldiers’ parcels to ex-members might, consider running a tournament on similar lines.
