SPORTSMEN'S FIELD DAY

PATRIOTIC EFFORT AT CARISBROOK COUNCIL OF SPORT'S SUCCESSFUL GALA IMPRESSIVE MARCH PAST The Otago Provincial Council of Sport’s patriotic gala at Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon was a most successful affair. The weather was somewhat threatening at the beginning of the afternoon, and there were a few passing showers, but the interest* aroused by the diversified programme arranged was shown by an attendance of about 3,500 spectators. With ticket sales yet to be included the Otago aPtriotio Fund should benefit to the extent of a sum not far short of £250. . Spectacular highlight of a most entertaining programme, in which several sports bodies co-operated, was the girls’ inarch past, in which nearly 1,000 girls in bright and colourful costumes were headed m a parade around the ground by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band. The marching and bearing of the teams were first class, and after circling theg round they formed into a massed V for Victory symbol. The crowd roared forth its applause, and the Kaikorai Band played the National Anthem. It was an impressive sight. The march past was one of the most comprehensive of its kind ever held in Now .ealand, reflecting great credit upon Mr T. E. Nauman,'who was responsible for its organisation. The teams taking part were: Interhouse sports teams —Arthur Barnett Ud., D. H Biaokio and Co., Cadbury Fry <on Ltd., Coulls, Somerville, Wilkie Ltd., D.I.C. Ltd., D.S.A. Ltd., Arthur Ellis Ltd., G. FOOTBALL ATTRACTIONS. Three football matches were played, and the appearance of Mosgiel, the 1941 Soccer champions, in a game against The Rest created a good deal of interest. Because of injuries to some of their players in the game between Otago and Canterbury the previous Saturday Mosgiel were not so strong as usual, but the game provided a good exhibition of the ronud ball code, although marred to some extent by the wind. It was well contested, and ended in a 1-all draw. The women’s Rugby game between Swimming Club girls and Hockey Club girls was a bright interlude, and ended in a scoreless draw. It was evident that both teams had undergone coaching, as the players showed more than passing acquaintance with scrum and line-out work, and there were several quite good passing movements. ••as a good effort on the part of the girls, and one that was greatly appreciated by the spectators. By way of relief at the conclusion of the game the referee was •'"•’deagled by the players and carried from ihe ground to the stand. The game between the Dunedin Pence fifteen and a Metropolitan team brought Rugby season to a close, Metropolitan winning by 8 ponits to 3. The Police made an excellent showing against a side largely comprised of representative players, and with a little luck mipht have won. In the last few minutes the Police team came, with a great rattle and staged the brightest movements of the day which nearly spelt success. ATHLETICS AND ARCHERY. Good fields and keen racing held interest in the athletic events, and the relays were particularly well contested. The 830yds secondary school relay was won by King’s High School No. 1 team, and in the 440yds men’s field sports relay Otago Boys’ High School F.C. scored a good win. The 440yds women’s field sports relay was won by tlia Swimmers’ Football No. I team. One of the best events of the afternoon was the one-mile open handicap, in which the young St. Kilda runner, R. F. Keller, led the field home in 4min 37sec from the 160yds mark. The ex-King’s High School runner went a well-judged race, and finished well. G. L Austin, the long-distance champion, filled third place from the 100yds mark, behind C. G. Lucas (Leith). The Otago mile champion, W. Burrows, ran a very good race from scratch, and, mowing down the field in the last lap, got up to finish fourth. A novel attraction which aroused a good deah of interest was the display by the Dunedin Archery Club, this consisting of exhibitions on targets at 30, 40, 50, and fiOvds, and of a clout shoot and wand smhoot. Those taking part in a fascinating exhibition were F. Wheeler (captain), K. Hamilton, N. Ryan, H. Butel, R. Campbell, H. Morrison, R. Dunne, H. Miles, C. Pickard, and Misses E. Miles, A. Morrison, and T. Hannagan. The presence of the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band and the Kaikorai Band enlivened proceedings during the afternoon. Special mention should be made of the gatemen, whose services were given voluntarily for the patriotic effort, the gate arrangements being in charge of Messrs E. Si. Wilson and D. M. Spedding, and the ground arrangements in charge of Mr S. Butter. Mr W. A Jenkins (president of the Otago Council of Sport) was the superintendent. The ground was generously placed at the council’s disposal by the Otago Rugby Football Union. Results: — ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. Mosgiel and The Rest played a drawn game, 1-1. The Rest showed better combination and underUanding than might have been expected, but lost many good chances in front of the goalmouth. For Mosgiel Skinner found the net in the first spell, and in the second L. Smith ecmaliscd for The Rest. The teams were' Mosgiel : F. -Scott, P>. Pearce, D. Kitlo, A. Stenliouse, 11. Mills, A. Paul, R. Clarke. J. Whitson. J. Skinner, A. Davidson, W. guveu. The Rout: L, Jj Peppereli 4

Hope, O’Neill, W. Meehan, W. Wilson, B. Walsh, W. Hurcomb, L. Smith, L. Groves, J. Little, and Stanley. Mr P. George was the referee. WOMEN’S RUGBY. The match between Swimming Club girls and Hockey Club girls ended in a scoreless draw after a keen tussle, feature ot the game was the excellent display given by the Hockey Club full-back, H. Harley, and the smart play of the respective halfbacks, B. Abernethy (Swimming Club) and B. Campbell (Hockey Club). The teams were:—Swimming Club: Backs —J. M'Lean, M. Dodds, N. Hanlin, K. Burns, P. Hanlin, D. Adams, E. Abernethy; forwards— Q. Phelan, L Phelan, G. Harris, 1. Purdie, A. Hill. M. Law, A. Gillies, J. Morgan. Hockey Club: Backs—H. Harley, H. Ferguson, R. Robertson, W. Ryan, D. Grey, B. Blackio, B. Campbell; forwards—M. Miller, J. Blackburn, P. Hardy, P. Mitcbell, E. Metcalfe, E. Morton, R. ' Quaid, N. Oliver. Mr J. R. Caradus was referee. POLICE-METROPOLITAN RUGBY GAME. On the run of the play there was very little between the Police and Metropolitan Rugby teams, and though Metropolitan won by 8 points to 3 the game might quite easily have gone the other way. The Police pack provided very solid opposition for the Metropolitan forwards, but there was a shade mere finish to the work of the Metropolitan backs. There was no score at half-time, but Metropolitan scored twice in quick succession on the resumption Churchill making a strong run from halfway to put in a centring kick which Barnes followed fast to score. Webster converted and kicked a penalty goal almost immediately afterwards. The Police then launched some strong offensives, G. Dwan and E. Black working nicely together close to the scrum. The former had bad luck in not scoring on one occasion when he mistook the Soccer line and grounded the ball a couple of yards short. Black finished off a little later, however, jinking his way over for a good try. which Berry did not convert. Webster played a very solid game as the Town’s last lino, and W’oodhouse, at half-back, gave a good account of himseif.
