TAIERI COMPETITIONS

NINTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL The sessions of the Taieri Competitions Festival commenced . on Saturday afternoon in St. Luke’s Hall, Mosgiel, and will continue till Thursday of this week.. They will conclude with a demonstration concert and prize-giving on Thursday, October 9. The judges for the various sections are: Mrs G. L. Martin (stage dancing), Dr Vernon Griffiths (vocal, choirs, violin, and piano), Mrs D. Gerkeu (national dancing), Mrs Anita Oliver (elocution, one-act plays, and playettes). Miss Westland is the honorary official accompanist to the vocal and instrumental sections, and the honorary official pipers for dancing are Messrs R. MTCenzio and K. Christiansen The committee, headed by the Rev. S. A. Grave, M.A. (president), comprises Messrs \V. Campbell,. A. I', Cheyno, W. Ewart, and J. W. Johnston; hon. secretary is Mr B. J. Mason; lion auditor, Mr G. T. Boyd ; and hon. treasurer, Mr S. W. Osborne. The officials are as follows :—Competitors’ marshal, Mr W. Campbell; stage manager,

Mr Osborne; timekeeper, Mr J. W. Johnston ; judges’ and Press stewards, Messrs G. T.. Boyd and J. W. Johnston; chief usher, Mr B. Wood; ticket box, Miss J. Harrison. SATURDAY AFTERNOON. At the opening session on Saturday afternoon the President declared the festival open and welcomed and introduced Rev. W. G. MTntosh, who presided. The following is a list of the awards: — Piano Solo, under 10. —Recalls to evening session: Miss Margaret Dysart and Miss Irene Marston. The following placings were made:—Master Keith Harrison and Miss Ellen Merry, • equal for third place; Miss Sylvia Begg and Miss Audrey Milner, h. 0.; and Master Noel Atkinson and Master Kevin M’Evoy, commended. Recitation, under 9. —Miss Valina Lobb and Miss Dorothy Jones (equal) 1, Miss Hilda Brockie 2, Master Ronald Lobb and Master John Mason (equal) 3. Also competed: Miss Patricia Goodlet and Miss iVlyrie Ives. Piano Solo, 10 and under 12.—Miss Anna Jensen 1, Miss Claire Beattie 2, Miss Irene Graham 3, Miss Hilary Mason c, Miss Joan M Tunes c. Song, Boys and Girls, under 9.—Master Billy Chambers 1, Miss Valma Lobb 2, Master Colin Campbell and Master John Mason (equal) 3, Master Keith Law c. Recitation, 9 and under 11.—Miss June Tregilgus and Master Harold Campbell (equal) 1, Miss Gracie Jenkins 3. The only competitors. Junior Choir of 12 Voices, Two-part Song, accompanied.—Green Island Junior Choir No. 1 1, St. Luke’s Junior Choir 2, Green Island Junior Choir No. 2 3. The only competitors. ■ Song, Boys and Girls, 9 and under 12. Recalls to Wednesday’s session: Miss Pat Golden and Miss Joan MTnues. The following . placings were also made:—Miss June Tregilgus 3, Miss Zona Astbury h.e.. Master Billy Campbell h. 0., Miss Hilary Mason c.. Miss Vilma Edwards c. SATURDAY EVENING. The attendance was not so large as in the afternoon. The chairman was Rev. A. H. Finlay. Miss Sylvia Arthur was awarded fourth place, and Miss Beverley Swallow’, Miss Jean Roebuck, and Miss Shirley J. Stewart were commended. Miss . This evening’s programme _ will consist of sacred choir selections, juvenile action songs and duets, playettes,. piano, adults and juvenile character sketches.
