TAIERI COMPETITIONS

NINTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL The sessions of the Taieri Competitions Festival commenced . on Saturday afternoon in St. Luke’s Hall, Mosgiel, and will continue till Thursday of this week.. They will conclude with a demonstration concert and prize-giving on Thursday, October 9. The judges for the various sections are: Mrs G. L. Martin (stage dancing), Dr Vernon Griffiths (vocal, choirs, violin, and piano), Mrs D. Gerkeu (national dancing), Mrs Anita Oliver (elocution, one-act plays, and playettes). Miss Westland is the honorary official accompanist to the vocal and instrumental sections, and the honorary official pipers for dancing are Messrs R. MTCenzio and K. Christiansen The committee, headed by the Rev. S. A. Grave, M.A. (president), comprises Messrs \V. Campbell,. A. I', Cheyno, W. Ewart, and J. W. Johnston; hon. secretary is Mr B. J. At the opening session on Saturday afternoon the President declared the festival open and welcomed and introduced Rev. W. G. MTntosh, who presided. The following placings were made:—Master Keith Harrison and Miss Ellen Merry, • equal for third place; Miss Sylvia Begg and Miss Audrey Milner, h. 0.; and Master Noel Atkinson and Master Kevin M’Evoy, commended. Recitation, under 9. —Miss Valina Lobb and Miss Dorothy Jones (equal) 1, Miss Hilda Brockie 2, Master Ronald Lobb and Master John Mason (equal) 3. Also competed: Miss Patricia Goodlet and Miss iVlyrie Ives. Piano Solo, 10 and under 12.—Miss Anna Jensen 1, Miss Claire Beattie 2, Miss Irene Graham 3, Miss Hilary Mason c, Miss Joan M Tunes c.
