CIGARETTES FOR SOLDIERS
SALES OF GIFTS IN EGYPT STEPS TO ELIMINATE PRACTICE (P. A.) WELLINGTON, August 26. Arrangements are being made to have the packets of cigarettes sent on behalf of the people of the Dominion by the National Patriotic Fund Board to the New Zealand forces overseas over-printed with the words “ Patriotic Issue,” instead of a gift announcement being placed inside the packets. This step is being taken with a view to preventing a recurrence of the sales of gift cigarettes, and is in line with the recommendation made recently by the Overseas Commissioner (Lieutenantcolonel Waite), who outlined several^of the difficulties that had been met with in connection with the gift cigarettes, but considered the reports of their sale grossly exaggerated. _ Instead of discontinuing the gift issues because of the difficulties an endeavour should he made to make the scheme perfect, he said.
