BOOKMAKIH6 OUTSIDE COURSE LARGE-SCALE OFERATIOHS ’ (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 9. • A-line of £IOO and costs was Imposed in the Police Court to-day on Walter Preston, aged 56, a carter, who pleaded guilty to bookmakiug on Saturday. The police said that Preston had a list of convictions between 1907 and 1932. He was arrested on Saturday in Grand View road, overlooking the flvo-furiong starting post at Ellerslie. Crowds, sometimes numbering 200, were congregated at this point, where a telescope was fitted up so that the totalisator results and tho jockeys’ board could bo seen. When arrested, Preston had papers which showed that he had taken a bet of £3O on one horse, while on the previous Wedensday be had laid as many as 50 bets on one race. He had over £477 in bis possession. Counsel for the defendant pointed out that Preston was not betting on the course. Ho was merely accommodating other punters.
