i , ■ [From Our Correspondent] BOWLING. The Balclutha Bowliug Club closed the season on Saturday, when mixed throes were played and the financial returns, which were very satisfactory, went to the Comforts for Soldiers’ fund. The president, during afternoon tea adjournment, expressed thanks to the ladies for their assistance throughout the season, and extended congratulations to Mr L. J. Edwards on winning the championship singles and pairs and also the handicap singles. Congratulations were also extended to Mr L. Allen on winning the “ colts ” competition. A very enjoyable afternoon’s play was indulged in,, the weather being good and the green in great order. . FOOTBALL, The Clutha Football Club opened the season on Saturday. Indications are that the club will field good teams in the open competition, and also in the under 16J years grade. Over 40 boys of the latter age turned up on Saturday, and put in solid work under the coaching of Mr H. Eoscvear. In the junior grade there is also -ome good talent, and the club hopes to be able to field a good fifteen. SOUTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION. In the absence of the president, Mr 14. Gallagher presided over a meeting of the executive committee of the S.O.R’.U. on Saturday night. Messrs L. M’Lean, H. Rosevear, and A. E. Paterson, representing the South Otago State Schools Sports Association, waited on the union to discuss matters in connection with the junior competition, comprising players under 16£ years. A-suggestion was made that a weight limit of 8 stone 81b be placed on these players. The chairman thanked the deputation for, coming along, ami said the union would do its best to assist. The secretary was instructed tc write’the four High Schools in the district and ask them for an expression of opinion re the weight limit, and to invite representatives of the Sports Association to next meeting to be held on May 17. Mr D. M. Inglis wrote donating a cup for the open competition, stating that he understood the banner was not to be played lor this season. The- Chairman said that under the circumstances it would be dosir- • able to cut out the banner this season, and cm the motion of Mr M‘Noe it was decided to thank Mr Inglis for his donation, and that the cup be played for during the dura- ' tiou of the war, the cup to be called the “ Glenthorn ” cup. Crescent Club wrote asking for permission to conduct a seven-a-side tournament for patriotic purposes, and suggesting May 17. fa the course of discussion it was thought that tho matter might be held over till the end of the first round of fixtures, when * general seven-a-side might be arranged and the proceeds divided between the various districts., It was decided that Crescent Club

■be notified that the union would endeavour to'meet its, wishes and. try to arrange a bye on the date suggested. Owing to Anzac Day failing on Friday next, it was decided that the opening day of the fixtures be put off till May 3. Mr S. Latta was appointed to the Management Committee as representative of Gatlins Club. It was. left to the president and secretary to make the open and junior draw, and to postpone the opening of the under 16i years competition till after the school holidays. It was left to Messrs M‘Noe and Clark to decide whether matches should be postponed or not through weather conditions. Indications are that there will be five teams in the open competition, four in the, under years, and at least six in the under 16J years grade. ANNUAL MEETINGS. Balclutha Hockey Club. —Miss E. Keach presided. . The balance sheet showed a credit of £4 Os 3d. The election' of officers resulted: President, Miss E, Keach; vice-presidents—Messrs H. Grace, J. H. Guest, D. Ballantyne, C. Mawson, Dr Dodds, and Rev. 0. T. Baragwanath; secretary, Miss Margaret Boyle; club captain, Mrs V. Wilson; committee. Misses H. Grace and N. Boyle with officers; auditor, Mr E. B. Lothian; delegate to South Otago Association, Miss Keach; delegate to Sports Committee, Mrs £. B. Lothian, Votes of thanks were accorded Miss L. Fallowfield, the retiring secretary, and Mrs P. Jardine for assistance given. The club , helds its opening day on Saturday. National Party.—The following officebearers were elected at the annual meeting of the Clutha branch of the National Party: President, Mr R. M’Credie (Pukeawa); vice-presidgnt, Mr J. G. Henderson; treasurer, Mr A. K. Baxter; secretary, Mr 0. S. Maginness; executive, Messrs E. B, Boyd (Waiwera), A. Craig (Greenfield), 0. Stokes (Kaitangata), C. J. Clery (Milton), R. Brown, J. B. M'Kinley, A. Tweed, T. M'Culloch, and Mr and Mrs J. T. Sutherland; delegates to Dominion conference, Messrs. M'Credie and Henderson. Mr A. 0. Laing, secretary of the Otago and Southland division of the National Party, gave a short address of matters relative to the party, S.O. Basketball Association.—Mrs A. R. Drearer presided over a good attendance. Officers: President, Mrs Dreaver; senior vice-president, Miss Btackie (Kaitangata); junior vice-presidents, Miss J. Ballavd and Mrs L. Cochrane; secretary. Miss Ron a Campbell; Press correspondent, Miss Jean M’Gregor. It was decided to write a letter of appreciation to Miss Winsome Armstrong for-her services as secretary for the past two years. Opening day was fixed for April 28, when a tournament will be played on the South Otago High School courts, teams being expected from Kaitangata, Clinton, South Otago H.S., Clutha A and R, KxHigh, and Stirling.
