DELICACIES FOR MAORI SOLDIERS
COCKED AND CURED EELS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 18. Seven fair-sized cases of cooked and cured eels arrived at the National Patriotic Fund Board’s goods store, Wellington, this afternoon from the Aro-ivhenua Maori runanga, Temufea. They aj-e for the Maori Battalion overseas. In a letter to the board, Mr Tamaio P. Paiki, chairman of the runann-a, stated that the whole of the work from the catching of the eels to the packing involved a considerable amount of community effort on the part of his people, who had been eager to assist in the war effort and to provide some of the Maori foods for their kinsmen overseas. He added that ho -was sure the fish couldbe shipped anywhere, even through the tropics. . According to the letter, the consignment comprises approximately 2.0-00 properly-cooked and cured (sun-dried) cols. Already the board has sent special delicacies to the Maori troops overseas and these have arrived in good order! They have included mutton birds, as well a.s dried crayfish- received from the Maoris on the cast coast of the North island.
