ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
STRUCK BY EXCAVATOR SCOOP. Struck by tho scoop of a largo excavator, which ho was helping to load on a trailer on tho Orakei railway overbridge (Auckland), an employee of the Public Works Department suffered injuries from which lie died almost immediately. Ho was Alfred Edward Phelan, married, aged about CO, of Ponsonby. Phelan was struck on the head by tho scoop, which dropped during tho loading operations. Ho was extensively injured, and died before help could bo brought. He was a brother of Air K. J. Phelan, No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority. CHILD KILLED IN SHOOTING ACCIDENT. Following a shooting accident at Hick’s Bay on Saturday, Joseph M’Clutchie (11) died in tho Te Puia Hospital yesterday, reports an Association message from Gisborne. The deceased and another boy secured possession of a rifle and a shotgun, one of which fell to the ground and exploded, the charge striking M'Clutchie in the face. ELDERLY MAN’S COLLAPSE. An elderly man, William John Thomas, aged 65, a resident of Caversham, collapsed in a corporation bus in Water street last night. A doctor was summoned, but could only pronounce life extinct. No inquest will he held.
