CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST ' PORT CHALMERS SUCCESSES The Port Chalmers Baud scored an outstanding success in the New Zealand Harmonica Bands championship' contest, which was held at Ashburton on Easter Sunday. Seven bands took part, and besides winning the quickstep and own selection and being second equal in the hymn test. Port Chalmers was first in the grand aggregate by a margin of 10.4 -points. The hymn test was won by Timaru Men. The musical points were as follows, these being for quickstep, selection, Jivmn test, and aggregate respectively; _lport Chalmers (89, 92, 47) 228 points, Enterprise (83, 91, 45) 219, Skippers (85, 87, 47) 219. Ashburton (imperial (SG, 87, 40) 213, Timaru Men (S 7, 77, 48) 212, St. Annne’s (81, 89,

42) 212, Timaru Ladies (81, 81, 42) 204. At the, conclusion of the contest the adjudicator, Mr A. L. Sutton, remarked on the splendid performance of all bands, and said he noted a remarkable improvement since his last judging of a harmonica band contest-.' Mr W. Matson, conductor of the Port Chalmers Band,-received the following trophies:— Arnott Cup (own selection), Aggregate Cup, the miniature aggregate cup, medal for the own selection, medal for the quickstep music selection, and the medal for most points in music. Mr G. Maher, the dnantnajor. won the M.S.A. challenge cup for quickstep -and the medal for the m,ost points in the military section.
