SHIPPING LOSSES
MONTHLY STATEMENTS IN FUTURE LONDON, April 15. (Received April 16, at 9.25 a.ni.) Many reasons have contributed to the decision to issue monthly instead of weekly figures of the losses of merchant shipping by enemy action. The weekly issue had been continued 'because it was felt that the advantage in telling the world the truth outweighed possible assistance which the enemy might Obtain in the way of information, but now it is more essential than ever that the enemy should be kept in the dark as to the possible proportion of losses due to submarine, air attack, raider, or mine, and the slightest deduction he might make for weekly figures might have some effect on the Battle of the Atlantic. Another consideration is that the sea areas covered are now so wide that it has, been found impossible to obtain figures in time to make the weekly losses comprehensive.
