Hassall for the Waikouaiti, Oamaru, Wyndham, and Invercargill fixtures.

JOTTINGS Answer to Correspondent. “ Anxious.”—The safety number at the several starting posts at Forbury Park are; Mila and a-quarter, 11; mile and a-half. 11: mile and five furlongs, 11; and two miles, 11. A proviso to the rule governing the number of horses that may start off any, one mark says;—“Clubs, when arriving at a decision as to whether any race should be run in divisions, may add not moro' than three to the numbers set out in the table. For example, if the safely number of a course is 12 off any one mark the raco need not be run in divisions unless there ato more than 15 horses accepted'for that mark, hut not more than 12 would be permissible in any one line.” Good Meeting for C. S. Donald. C. S. Donald had a most successful time at Addington last week, as horses from his stablo won £2,700 in stakes. 'A Big Drop. In the two-horse field for the Canterbury Cup last Wednesday only £BB3 was invested on tho totalisator, as compared with £4,746 last year and £3,148 10s in 1938. Big Stakes for One Day. Tho Ashburton Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme for its Boxing Day meeting, giving £2,825 in stakes. In addition to the Champion Stakes for three-year-olds, which carries a stake of £750, the Ashburton Cup (class 4min 29sec) is endowed with the same stake. Nominations close on December 9. In Hearth’s Favour. When* Hearth dead-heated with Hanna in the Cressy Handicap, rim over a mile, last Saturday Wild Career was only a length behind the dead-heaters, and was conceding Hearth 21b. Though the latter has been penalised Blh in the Flying Handicap, to bo run at, Invercargill next Monday, she will meet Wild Career on 41b better terms. Hurdle Races. Both the Dunedin and Southland Clubs’ holiday programmes include hurdle races, each of the four events carrying stakts of £l5O, a .d will be run over a mile and a-half. Hurdlers in Otago and Southland are not good nor numerous this season, and these races offer a good opportunity for a northern owner or two to visit these fixtures.

Gore Trotting Club. The programme of the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Boxing Day, shows that £1,600 will be distributed in stakes, and tho principal races, the Gore Trotting Cup (class 4min 45scc) and Final Handicap (class 2min 56scc), carry £350 and £2lO respectively. Nominations close .oil December 9. Welcome Rain. Farmers and gardeners will not be alone in welcoming the good rain to-day, as the tracks at Wingatui were getting very firm and causing anxiety to trainers. It will also be welcomed by the caretaker at Forbury Park, and 24 hours of it will have that track in good order for Saturday's racing. ' Regal and Three Tens. Regal, who will be bracketed with Ned Worthy if they both start in the King George Handicap next Saturday, gave Three Tens 12yds and a length and a-half beating when he won Uio Metropolitan Handicap last Thursday in 3min 34sec for a mile and five furlongs, equal to just under 4min 25scc for two miles. Three Tens was slow to begin, and did not get a - good run over the last half-mile. Ned Worthy. When Ned Worthy won (ho Victoria Handicap at Addington last Tuesday he was in receipt of 12yds from Zincali and beat him by three-quarters of a length in 4min 22scc. "These two will meet ' again m the King George Handicap mi Saturday, a 4min 32soc class event, and they prommiec to be bard to beat off the limit. Zincali was a little slow to begin, but Ned Worthy easily bold him off at the finish. A Poor Contest. ... As neither Special Force nor Ronald Logan, who arc considered to be the best three-year-olds of the season, were engaged in this year’s Trotting Derby, the class represented was not worthy of the rich stake, £1,250, and when the favourite, Peter Find, broke over half a mile from home, a lot of interest was list in the contest. Tho winner, Gold Chief, however, proved himself to be a good, game colt, and promises to stay on well. Not Quite Ready. When Fine ,Art, one of the best pacers in Hie Dominion, paraded for Hie New Zealand Trotting Cup, and no doubt made favourite on that account, many good judges maintained that he was carrying too much condition to run out a fast two miles, and their opinions were confirmed in his running. He ran a great race while liis condition lasted, but failed badly over the (Inal two furlongs. That race apparently got to Hie bottom of him, as he raced badly afterwards. But be will do belter before the season is much further advanced.

TROTTING. November 23, 25. —Forbury Park Trotting Club. November 30, December 7.—Waikato Trolling Club. December 7.—Wairio Trotting Club. December 7.—Now Brighton Trotting Club. December 14. —Roxburgh Trotting Club. December 21.—Reefton Trotting Club. December 26. —Ashburton Trotting Club. December 26.—Gore Trotting Club. December 26. 27.—Westnort Trotting Club. December 27, 28, 31. —Auckland Trotting Club. December 28.—Winton Trotting Club.

Royal Chief. Many excuses were offered for Royal Chief's defeat in the New Zealand Cup, among them being that L. J. Ellis had his whip knocked out of his hand., .at I lie start. He is naturally a grass horso and may have been short of a gallop or two. On the morning before the Metropolitan Handicap was run he was credited with sprinting over six furlongs in Imin 14 2-sscc. That gallop and his races in the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups no doubt sharpened him up, and it is certain that if the New Zealand Cup had been run last Saturady lie would have bad the finish to himself. He is right at the peak of his form, and on last Saturday’s form would have held his own with the best in Australia. To Meet Again. Ring True, Cruiser, Harold Guy, Accountant. and Peter Smith, who are booked to meet in the King George Handicap on Saturday, were starters in the Lchevre Handicap at Addington last Thursday, both races 4min 32sec class events, but. there was a howling galo blowing at the time which militated against fast times being recorded. Peter Smith (12yds) won by a neck in 4min 27seo from Accountant (24yds), with Harold Guy (12yds) half a length away third and Ring True (scr) three lengths further back fourth. In this race Peter Smith was well pocketed until approaching the entrance to the straight, and put up a very fine finishing run to heat Accountant. In the King George Handicap Peter Smith will meet Accountant on 12yds, Harold Guy, Cruiser, and Ring True on 24yds worse terms. He is now returning to the good form he showed last season, and with belter luck in the running than lie had at Addington should beat these four again,,

Don’t Forget. It is difficult to estimate at which distance Don’t Forget is at his best. He has won over six furlongs three times under heavy imposts and in fast times. Three times he has failed over seven furlongs, won tho Dunedin Guineas, one mile,, in fast time, and was only just beaten in the Derby by Enrich in fast time. In the Stewards’ Handicap Sir. Beau conceded him 121 b and beat him several lengths, but under level weights in the Derby Don’t Forget just as easily accounted for him. Over six furlongs at Dunedin Doria gave him 141 b and a beating, but next time they met Don’t Forgot gave this filly 51b and beat her easily over a mile. Last Saturday he was set to give Doria 101 b over a mile, but was not started, taking on the open seven furlong race, but was never threatening danger, while Doria won tho mile race in Imin 37 3-ssoo.

Heavy Support for Southern Horses. Including several horses owned in the Otago and Southland provinces and trained at Eiccarton and Canterbury owned horses trained in Otago there were no fewer than 57 hortes carrying the colours - 'of , owners resident south of the Waitaki River racing at tho New Zealand Cup meeting, and between them' they had invested' on their' chances on the win and place totalisators the large sum of £49,644 10s. Tho number of starts each horse had is shown in parentheses, and the following were tho total investments on each:—Sir Amvns (3) £4,8331, Spanish Lad (3) £3,453£, Silver Lily (3) £3,159’, Lord Nuffield (2) £2,63U, Royal Lancer (3) £2,617, The Raker £2,5914, Wild Career (4) £2,5134, Gold Flight (3) £2,1704, Wild Coon (31 £2.126i, Boswell (2) £2,005’, Boloyna (2) £1,696, Petersham (3) £1,6224, Strip (1) £1,5704-, Norseman (3) £1,494, Airline (2) £1.4284, Hearth (21 £1.1824.
