OLD ROWLEY’S CUP

BEAU VITE FINISHES FOURTH WEIGHT BEATS THE NEW ZEALANDER AURIE'S STAR AGAIN SUCCESSFUL HIGH CASTE AND ST. CONSTANT DEADHEAT MELBOURNE, November 5. Early-morning rain affected the Melbourne Cup attendance, which was excellent under the circumstances. Conditions improved as the day advanced, and the going was satisfactory. By winning the Melbourne Cup Old Rowley created the greatest surprise since Wotan won. Form suggested that he had little chance, and he was one of the extreme outsiders of the field. Although he was badly placed in the early stages his stamina prevailed. The rider, A. Knox, was second on Yarramba to Peter Pan in 1932. Maikai added to his unlucky runs in big races to. come second. He filled a similar position last year. Tidal Wave (New Zealand-bred) finished well in third place, making a great effort. Beau Vite appeared to have every chance, being on the rails throughout, but weight beat him and he finished a good fourth, just ahead of Beaulivre, who led for a moment in the straight. Lucrative was a good sixth. Pandect weakened. Historian was the disappointment of the race and was never dangerous. The others were outclassed. The winner is raced and trained in Sydney by J. Scully. Old Rowley has now won just over £IO,OOO in stakes.

The Sydney jumper Valhalla, in his first start over the battens in Melbourne, outclassed his rivals in the Cup Hurdle Race. Mamillius ran a game race, but was no match for the winner. North Cape finished third. Mr Bailey Payten, the trainer of Valhalla, and the owner, Mr P. H. Osborne, were associated with Ecarte’s win in this event in 1923. Auric’s Star had a comfortable win in the Railway High-weight Handicap and led all the way. All Veil finished well after a slow beginning. David Innis was third. The winner’s weight of 11.4 is not a record, as Fujisan won twice with 11.9 and 12.1 respectively.

Cradle Song went at a great pace early in the Mimosa Stakes, but weakened. Cooeh Behar had an impressive victory. Primavera ran a good race. Her Highness finished well. St. Constant and High Caste (New Zealand) staged a great finish in the Yan Yean Stakes. St. Constant would have won outright but for attempting to savage High Caste 100yds from the post. Remarc was a good third. CUP HURDLE HANDICAP, £7OO. Two miles. VALHALLA, 10.10 (L. Hvnes) ... 1 Mamillius, 10.11 (L. Meehan) ... 2 North Cape, 10.10 (B. Watts) ... 3 Nine started. Gilltown made the bulk of the pace from Indignity, Wilson, Beau Vite. John Dory, and Beaulivre, with Maikai and Tidal Wave in the middle of the field. Old Rowley was fourth last. Pandect raced to the lead at the five furlongs, followed by Dashing Cavalier, Gilltown, Wilson, Bean Vite, and Indignity, with the placed horses still well back. Old Rowley moved up very fast passing the half-mile, and ran to the front below the distance to beat the fast-finishing Maikai bv three-quarters of a length. Tidal Wave was a neck away, and then came Beau Vite, Beaulivre, Lucrative, Apostrophe. Pandect, and Pantler, with True Flight and Indignity last. Time, 3min 26sec. WINNERS TO DATE.
