BEAU VITE’S PRIZE MONEY
OWNER'S DILEMMA QUESTION OF DESTINATION SYDNEY, November 4. The Sydney ‘ Sun’s ’ special representative at the Cup carnival reports that an amazing situation has arisen with regard to the destination of the prize money earned in Australia by Beau Vite. If he wins the cup to-morrow the New Zealand Government will insist that the prize money, totalling £6,250, together with all other Beau Vite’s earnings, should be remitted to New Zealand. The Commonwealth Government has informed the owner, Mr R. Stewart, that Beau Vito’s earnings cannot leave this counfci*y • Mr Stewart, who was interviewed to-day. said that when he left New Zealand he had to sign an undertaking that all moneys won should be returned to the Dominion. Ho explained that the position had become so embarrassed that he had referred the matter to legal opinion. He felt that ho had an obligation to both countries, but there was little doubt that while he was domiciled in Australia he was bound to obey the laws of (he country. No special restrictions have been imposed by the New Zealand Government in regard to Beau Vito’s earnings, according to oflicia! quarters, which regard the report as a newspaper story. It is pointed out that tho New Zealand Government could, if necessary, purchase tho horse’s winnings and establish credit in Australia and pay the owner the equivalent in New Zealand currency.
