AT WINGATUI THIS MORNING The centre of the course proper with the trestles about 30ft out from the rails was open for fast work at Wingatiii this morning. and it was in good condition. A strong wind assisted fast times along the back, but over the last two and a-half furlongs horses were racing right into it, and the times recorded over the final three furlongs were much slower than those along the back. Tho best gallop of tbo morning, and irobably the best at Wingatui for some vears, was tho mile run by Night Pal and Jfanlon. They ran tho first furlong in 12 3-ssec, two in 24 l-ssec, three in 35 4-saec, four in 50sec, five in 61 4-ssec, and then Night Pal drew right away from his companion to beat him home by eight lengths in Imin 43sec. The Welcome Stakes candidate Silver Lily was accompanied by Astaire in a sprint over three furlongs in 40sec. She will be ridden in her engagement on Saturday by L. J. Ellis, who rode her when she won the M'Lean Stakes last month.

Nightcahn and Boloyna took Imin 19 2-ssoc to uin six furlongs. Coy and an unnamed companion were not extended to run the same distance in Imin 25 3-ssec.

After running the first two furlongs in 25seo Withdrawal completed six in Imin 20 2-sseo, and was easing up ever the last half-furlong. Spear Thrust was ridden out to keep on terms with Sir Amyas over seven furlongs in Imin 33 l-ssec. They ran the first two in 24 3-ssoc, and three in 37 d-sscc.

My Song and an unnamed young one by Irish Lancer sprinted over three furlongs in 41 2-ssec.

Taxpayer was going slightly better than Gay Lancer at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-sscc. the first two furlongs i.i 24scc, three in 37 l-ssec, and half-mile in 49 4-ssec.

JOTTINGS Invercargill Spring Meeting. Nominations for the Southland Racing Club’s Spring Meeting, to be held on November 25, will close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Appeal Lodged. L. W. Hare has lodged an appeal against the one month’s suspension imposed on him by the Hanks Peninsula Judicial Committee, and the Canterbury District Committee was to sit this afternoon to consider it. Lord Nuffield. Lord Nuffield, who went amiss on the eve of the Gore meeting, was worked a couple of rounds on the sand track at Wingatui this morning and appeared to be moving -quite soundly. Bad Luck For Owner. Atreus, who was a good two-year-old and promised to develop into a better three-year-old. mot with an accident, cutting one of his feet badly, a few weeks ago, and it will be some time before he can race. License Restored. J. W. Dooley, who was one of six jockeys who were granted conditional licenses at the beginning of the season, baa been advised by the Racing Conference that he has now been granted a clean license for the remainder of the season. Thermidor Amiss, Thermidor, a good winner last year with £1,135 to her credit, has not been fortunate this season, her only appearance being in a race at Riccarton in August. At present Thermidor is in E. C. Parker’s charge at Riccarton while she undergoes veterinary treatment. Wingatui Horses for Riccarton. There will be a general exodus of horses from Wingatui to Riccarton next Thursday morning. A. E. Didham leaves with Strip, Boloyna, Withdrawal, and Nightoalm; J. J. Cotter with Gay Lancer and Spear Thrust; D. J. M’Donald with Hanlon, Taxpayer, and Sir Amyas; and H. A. M’Donald with Silver Lily. Prefers Chance in Stewards to Derby. C Emerson staled at the Motukarara meeting that Don’t Forget lias done well since racing at, Wingatui, and liis owner’s present intentions are to start him in both the Stewards’ Handicap and Derby. Emerson thinks the latter race will be a very hard one to win Ibis season, but gives his gelding a good chance in the Stewards’ Handicap. Confident. A Wanganui correspondent says:—ln spite of Royal Chief’s fine performance at Trentham in winning the principal event, followers of the Pordell stable are confident Taurangi will make things very interesting for him in the New Zealand Cup. Taurangi has yet to prove herself over (wo miles, but her supporters look to her to see out the distance all right. Taurangi. Not only because she is a daughter of that successful sire Beau Pere will Taurangi be fancied in the New Zealand Cup. This five-year-old mare won two of the three races she contested last season, and finished third under 9.0 to Globe Trotter 7.2 and Sleeveless 7.11 in the other, her first race of the season. As a two-year-old she won three times, was twice second and once third out of 10 starts. This season she lias also been raced sparingly, but won at her last =tart, over a mile and a-quarter, at the Rnngitikei meeting last Saturday, when she can-fed 9.8, in 2min Bsec. Her clam, Barbacan, was bred in Australia and is by Top Gallant from Columbia by Spearmint, Carbine’s best son. Taurangi thus has -trams of Hurry On and Carbine, and this combination stands for stamina. Though Taurangi has yet to be tried out over a long journey, she should not be found wanting with this blood in her veins.

TROTTING. November 12, 14, 15.—New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. November 23, 25.—Porbury Park Trotting Club. November 30, December 7.—Waikato Trotting Club. December 7.—Wairio Trotting Club. December 7.—New Brighton Trotting Club. December 14.—Roxburgh Trotting Club. December 21.—Reofton Trotting Club. December 26. —Ashburton Trotting Club. December 26.—Gore Trotting Club. December 26, 27.—Westport Trotting Club. December 27, 28, 31. —Auckland Trotting Club. December 28.—Wintou Trotting Club.

A Good Cup Trial. The Buzzer was responsible for a good New Zealand Cup trial when he won tho Waverley Cup at Hawera. He paraded in splendid order, and should be in great fettle for the big event at Ricarton. The Buzzard gelding was always in a handy position, but at the turn into the straight his supporters had an anxious moment or two as lie appeared to be boxed in on the rails. It was not until well inside the distance that he got an opening, and this enabled him to get through and win convincingly. The Buzzer did not have a strong Hold to beat, but his performance suggests that he will run a great race in the Cup. Going to be Hard, Since racing at the Oamaru trotting meeting last month Fine Art has done well, and the race he had at that fixture has sharpened him up. He has now come well into the limelight in the early wagering on tho Trotting Cup to be run next Tuesday. Ho is a much better horse on a dirt track than on grass. At Oamaru he was handy to the leaders on the home turn, but about a furlong from the winning post, and just as he was about to commence his final run. Cantata broke just in front of him, and the wheels of their sulkies interlocked.

Also Carried 9.6. When Nightmarcb won the New Zealand Cup in 1930 he carried 9.6,i the same weight as Royal Chief has to carry on Saturday. It was a much stronger field that Nightmarch had to beat than will be opposed to Royal Chief next Saturday,, so if those who claim the latter to be as good as Nightmarch are correct in their estimation Royal Chief’s task should bo a comparatively easy one. Sir Beau. Before leaving Wanganui to win the Guineas at Trentham, Sir Beau is credited with having run the fastest five; furlongs recorded on the Wanganui track for some years. Despite, this brilliancy over sprint distances his connections are confident he will run out a mile and a-half in the Derby. Last year Beaulivre won the Stewards’ Handicap under 8.10 and the Derby on the second day. Sir Beau has 8.3 in tins year’s Stewards’ Handicap. Cup and Stewards’ Deletions. The horses that dropped out of the New Zealand Cup at the final acceptance yesterday afternoon were Siegmund, Sparkle, Doublcack, and Don Quex, leaving a possible field of 19. Sleeveless, Dtmcannon, Nigger Boy, Sir Crusoe, Rakahanga, Hearth, and Retrogression were not paid up for in the Stewards’ Handicap, leaving 15 in. The only surprise iri these deletions is Sir Crusoe, who has been one of the favourites for the Stewards’ Handicap during the past fortnight. The Buzzer. No horse engaged in this year’s New Zealand Cup has better credentials as a stayer than The Buzzer, and he has had a very thorough preparation. Ho won the Auckland Cup three years ago, and the following season was only beaten a head in the New Zealand Cup by Arctic King after a very unlucky run in the straight, being hampered by Milford, who ran about and finished third two lengths away. He carried 8.3 in that race, and it was won in 3min 24 3-ssec. Last season, as a six-year-old, ho bad only four races and did not show up well. But this season he has raced consistently well. After starting in two sprint races at the Marton and Foxton meetings in September lie won over a mile and aquarter at the Otaki-Maori meeting last month. Ho carried 9.0, and among those behind him were Siegmund 8.12, Little Robin 7.12, and Pearl of Asia 7.8. He won -so easily that his rider was allowing him to ease up at the finish in 2min 9sec. His only other start was in the Waverley Cup, also a mile and a-quarter, and carrying 9.3 he again won easily in 2min 14 4-ssec on a holding track. The opposition in this race was not strong, but The Buzzer won so well that it was quite a satisfactory Cup trial. The value of those two races being under £SOO did not entail a penalty, and with 8.6 lie appears to be nicely handicapped m Saturday’s race. The Buzzer is by The Buzzard from Eastern Belle, and was bred in Australia. Eastern Belle is by Syce (by Cyllene) from Culture, by Boniforra from Culray by Wallace, and is a half-sister to Terenlia, the dam of Lough Neagh. Eastern Belle was a good performer, winning five races before being put to the stud early.
