CRICKET

SOME GOOD SCORING JAFFRAY JUST MISSES CENTURY Good weather and good wickets favoured cricketers on Saturday, when some substantial, while not exceptionally high, scores -were made. Three of the four sides which had first use of the wickets passed the 200 mark, University’s 246 against Carisbrook B being the highest. Towards this total Weston contributed 74 and Rennie 50; Nimmo and Valentine each capturing four wickets. Carisbrook B’s response was solid, 96 runs being accumulated for the loss of two wickets, Cavanagh once more displaying attractive form in making 48 not out. Albion’s total against Grange was 226, which was Iss sthan looked probable when 137 was on the board for two wickets. Smith (52) and Ditchfield (51) were responsible for a partnership of 96. Riley also shaped well. Knight had again to bear the brunt of the bowling, and he captured six for 83. Grange is fighting back with 78 up for the loss of one wicket (Payne not out 39). . , Kaikorai’s 21 against Carisbrook A bowling was mainly the result of two good innings by Jaffray (97 not out) and M Gregor (45), Dougan (six for 57) being easily the A’s most successful bowler. Carisbrook has lost two wickets for 49. The scoring in the Dunedin-Old Buys match was slow and light. Dunedin batsmen again failed after the two opening men (Robertson 38, and O’Sullivan 25) had given the side a favourable start. The total reached only 148, Groves taking five for 38. Old Boys had lost one for 28 at stumps. ALBION'S GOOD START N GRANGE RECOVERS GROUND Albion-Y.M.C.A., meeting Grange on the outside ground at-Logan Park on Saturday, made an excellent start when its second wicket fell at 157, but thereafter the average was not maintained. Smith and Duncan opened, the innings, and the latter batted in his usual correct style and quickly ran to 24, when he mistimed one from Elmes and was bowled. Then Smith and Ditchfield entered upon a partnership which yielded just four runs short of the hundred. Both batted remarkably well, Ditchfield, strange to say, getting his runs at much the faster rate. He was going along confidently when he went for an impossible run and was easily run out. His 51 was made in 54 minutes. Without any addition to the total of 137 Smith was smartly taken by Galland at the wickets. He compiled 52 in 80 minutes. The only other batsman to shape at all well was Riley, whose 36 was attractively made, though Everson, goin» in late, knocked up a useful 18. ‘The total of 226 was, after the good start, disappointing. Knight was again Grange’s best bowler, his six wickets costing 85 runs. Donovan and Payne opened Grange’s innings, but the former was run out ]ust when he had reached double figures. Freeman and Payne carried on confidently, and at “stumps'” the score was 78 for one wicket. Details:—

A NEAR CENTURY KAIKORAI'S HANDY TOTAL Kaikorai, baiting first against Carisbrook A at Bishopscourt, made none too good a start, but M'Gregor and Jaffray saved the situation by steady contributions. The latter was not out when within three runs of his century, and his score included 16 4’s. Hougan came out with creditable figures. Details:— KAIKORAI. First Innings. UNIVERSITY RECDVERS BEST SCORE OF DAY A splendid wicket was provided at Carisbrook, and University took advantage of it to compile 246 against the home club’s B team. The start was none too propitious, but Rennie (50) and Weston (74) took charge in the middle section of the innings and pulled things together. Useful doublefigure contributions by other batsmen enabled the satisfactory total mentioned, to be reached. ~ The B team replied strongly, Cavanagh (48 not out) and Buckley (21) giving it a fine start. SLOW BATTING DUNEDIN'S POUR SCORE Although Robertson (38) and O’Sullivan (25) gave Dunedin an excellent start against Old Boys’ bowling at Tonga Park, the rest of the team, with the exception of F. Wedlake (24) and M’Donald (19), failed badly, none reaching double figures. Groves’s slows were effective, his five wickets costing only 38 runs. Payne also bowled well.
