NOTES ON THE EVENTS

[Special to the ' Star.’] Sea Peter established a handy lead from GJeam and Dewey’s Last over the first six furlongs of tho Novice Handicap, but he was well beaten half a mile from home, and Gleam took the lead, to bo quickly challenged by Dewey’s Last. In a ne'ek-and-neck struggle down the straight Dewey’s Last got the advantage in the last stride, and beat Gleam by a neck. Bonnie Sandy came from a good way back to get third money two lengths away, and Oregon was a fair fourth. » * * * Jock M’Grath was left with a good lead in the Monowai Handicap, when Helen’s Tower and Special Bond broke at the end of half a mile, and, although he tired over the last half-furlong, he hung on under the whip and beat the strongly-finishing Geelong by four lengths. Helen’s Tower was two lengths away third, and Jimmy Drusus next « * * « The Thomson Handicap was a good rare to the straight with Bondsman, Gold Streak, Direct Bell, Irish Guy, Sister Polly, and Harbinger all holding winning positions. Once in the straight Gold Streak shot to tho front ami beat oil a strong challenge from Sister Polly by a nook. Direct Bell was two lengths away third, and there was a gap of four lengths to the fourtli horse, Bondsmon, with Irish Guy and April Direct next. Sister Polly was unlucky. Gold Pot, who was a solid favourite, won the Invercargill Trotting Cup with a brilliant finishing run. Toceetie made the running over the first mile from Seaward do Oro, Desert Cloud, Ghaudi, and Flash Guy. The last-named then ran into second place, and with half a mile to go Toceetie had a lead of two lengths and was going well. At this stage Gold Pot was hopelessly pocketed on the rails, am! he dropped right back to second last to get a run on the outer. Once he got clear he put in a brilliant run to be on terms with Toceetie near the home turn, and when Toceetie broke under pressure at the distance Gold Pot was left unchallenged to win by five lengths Toceetie finished in a break to beat Foremost Junior by two lengths, and Seaward de Oro and Ghandi were next. The time was the slowest since 1933, iho first mile taking 2.26 4-ssee and the mile and threequarters 3min 26 4-ssce. It was an outstanding performance on the part of the winner, as he was 20 lengths behind tho leader when he was pulled to the outer near the half-mile,

Oregon made practically all tlie running m the 'rakiliniu Handicap, and led into Uic straight a length clear of Lisetlo and Parole, who were clear of Erin’s View and Lunch flour. In the run I onic Lisette and Oregon staged a keen duel, and Lisette pot up on the post to win by half a head. Parole was five lengths away third, followed by Erin’s View and Indian Wrack. Polling Day’s front carrier broke when ho was moving up fast in fourth place with about six furlongs to go, and his owner was lined £1 for faulty gear. The bracketed pair, Geelong and Gold Logan, driven by son and father respectively, contested tha finish of the Travis Memorial Handicap, and victory went to Geelong by a- narrow margin. Jock M’Grath, who was- penalised 48yds, got, away slowly, hot moved up into third place behind the pacemakers Hc’en’s Tower and Gold Logan at the end of six fui longs. Wifh half a mile to go Helen’s Tower broke, and interfered with Shanghai Peggy, who had joined <he leaders on the rails. Parrish Gipsy ran to the front m the next furlong, ami led into the straight from Geld Logan and Geelong. In a good finish Geelong hung on well and beat Gold Logan by half a length, with Parrish Gipsy two lengths away and Shanghai Peggy next. Jock M’Grath stopped badly over the last half-mile Drummer Boy was always well placed in the Cre-cenl Handicap, and he took the lead from Real Gold . two furlongs fre.-m home, ami led into the straight, from Heal Gold and Turco. The last-named finished fast to get within a length ami a-half of Drummer Boy at the finish, and he would probably have won had he not been kept too far out of the running in the first mile. Real Gold was- three lengths away third, and Vorena, who had every chance, was next. The winner paid a big dividend on Gie win machine. The Members’ Handicap was won by the little-fancied Drumoak, who took charge six furlongs and led into the straight four lengths clear of Marque, Hash Guy, WorthyCross, who was bracketed with Drumoak, and Sister Polly. Marque finished well, but Drumoak beat her by two and a-half lengths. Flash Guy was a similar distance away third, and Worthy Cross, Sister Polly, and Ghandi next. Passing By got away badly, and made a fast run tc- ho close np to the leading division at the 1 omc turn, but Toceelie carried her wide out. and both horses broke. Passing By was going as well as anylhing at this stage. Sister Polly was a hit slow cut. and never got a good run
