[By St. Clair.] The course was in excellent order, and provided a first-class testing ground for the New Zealand Cup meeting, which will open next Saturday, Willow Wood was made £8 bettor favourite than Stylist on the win machine for the Okaina Trial Stakes, and was unlucky to miss the jump out. Sham Eaid began the smartest out of the barrier, and tried to - win all the way. He was followed alon" the back by Confident, Calypso, and Dispense, and at the home turn was three lengths clear of the same tricy who had been joined by Speedwell, and Willow Wood, wide out, was making up bis ground well. At the distance Sham Raid was headed by Dispense, and then stopped badly. Dispense ran home a good winner by two lengths from Willow Wood, who beat Calypso half a length. Star Wink was fourth, then Stylist and Big Game. The winner is a three-year-old gelding by Paper Moncv from Mwera, and gave the young trainer, C. G. Humphries, his first success. # • * • Cymric was made a good favourite for the Kaituna High-weight Handicap, being £lOl better fancied than Dividend, and. leading all the way, won easily. He was

followed out of the. straight by Lockheed and Greenbank, and was three lengths clear of them as they raced along the back. Approaching the home turn Lockheed retired. and the favourite was nearly four lengths clear from Greenbank, Twenty Grand, and Rua. He rau home a very easy winner by four lengths from Rua, who just got up to beat Twenty Grand out of second money. Greenbank and Ageratum were next. Cymric, who won in a similar manner at Rangiora on Labour Day, is a four-year-old gelding by Roydon from Helen Gold.

Spangled Maiden was made £175 better favourite than the Becky Parrish-Uiamond Cluster-Hoylo bracket for the Duvauchelie Harness handicap, but had little to spare 'at the finish from Indian Clipper. Hoyle, Reservist, Serapium, Vera do Oro, and Ormolu failed to go away. Diamond Cluster and Hoyden led over the early stages, and at the end of half a mile Lndian Clipper, Cyme, and Spangled Maiden were following them. After rouning the far turn the favourite ran up into third place, and she followed Indian Clipper and Diamond Cluster into the straight. At the distance Spangled Maiden challenged Indian Clipper and in a good struggle to the post the former won by a short neck. Cynic was six lengths away third, then followed Hoydon and Reservist. , Spangled Maiden is an imported four-year-old filly from America, and was having only her third start. * * * * All 14 acceptors went to the post for the Buchanan Memorial Handicap, and the Auckland New Zealand Cup candidate, Te Kawiti, was sent out about £llO better fancied than Wardress, only this pair being solidly supported. From an excellent start Second Innings was slowest to jump out, and Swordstick led Prudent Prince, Dictate, Capricious. Te Kawhiti, and Cape Gabo through the straight. As they raced past the six-furlong post Swordstick was joined in the lead by Mungatoon, and they were followed along the back by Prudent Prince, Dictate, and Second Innings. At the far turn Mungatoon was a neck in front of Swordstick, with Second Innings, Dictate, Prudent Prince, Cape Gabo, Night Dress, Te Kawiti, Roy Bun, Wardress, and Sailing Lady next, and all racing in fairly close order. Mungatoon disappeared in the run across the top, and Dictate was first into the straight from Swordstick, Second Innings, Cape Gabo, and Night Dress, with Te Kawiti on the rails further back. At the distance Second Innings, Dictate, and Swordstick were racing abreast with Night Dress at the head of the others. Second Innings held on the best in a see-saw finish to beat Dictate a head, and two lengths away Swordstick was third, heads in front of Night Dress and Capricious. Wardress, Te Kawiti, and Cape Gabo were next, and Pink Lad last , The winner is a seven-year-old gelding by Winnuing Hit from Lady Clarenceux, and was having only his second start this season. He is engaged in the New Zealand Gup with 7.3. in which Dictate will meet him on 41b better terms.

King’s Toast was backed down to a short price for the Brackenfield Hack Handicap for apprentice riders, carrying £l3O more than Dranoel, and after being last into the straight won very easily. Stock Exchange led Metric and Blue Abbey along the back, and at the far turn Metric ran to the front and was two lengths clear of Blue Abbey and Stock Exchange as they raced across the top, where the favourite was tailing the field. Metric led into the straight from Blue Abbev, Stock Exchange, Alias, and Dranoel, the latter getting pushed out wide. Then the favourite commenced a good run, and, catching Metric about 100yds from the post, beat him easily by three lengths. Abas was a length away third, just beating Blue Abbey on the post. Royal Refrain, who was a little slow to begin, and Kilcato were next. King’s Toast is a four-year-old gelding bv Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, and scored so easily that he will be worth following at the New Zealand Cup Meeting.

Schoolgirl was made a little over £3O better favourite than Hearth, with L. J. Ellis up, for the Le Bons Handicap, and scored easily. Skyrena and Schoolgirl were the first to show out, and when a couple of furlongs had been covered this pair was closely attended by St. Cloud, with Knight Commander, Hearth, and Games next. Going to the far turn Gamos moved up, and with three furlongs to go ran into second place. Skyrena was first into the straight from Gamos, Schoolgirl, St. Cloud, and Hearth. Schoolgirl headed Skyrena at the distance and beat her home two lengths. Hearth was' a length away third, with Gamos and Knight Commander-next. The winner is a brown five-year-old maro by Paper Money from Air Valve, and scored her first success in open company.

Burt Scott was made £B2 10s better favourite than Top Hand for the Little River Harness Handicap, but after leading to the distance was well beaten in the run in, the winner, Grattanita, returning a big dividend. Great Joy and Hoyle lost their chances at the start, and Happy Man went away slowly. Burt 'Scott was in charge when a furlong had been covered, and led through the straight from Grattanita, Garment, and Swift Lady. _ With a mile to go Burt Scott was just in front of Grattanita and Garment, with Happy Man making up his ground fast. Burt Scott was first into the straight, but at the distance gave way to Grattanita and Happy Man. Grattanita beat Happy Man a length, with Burt Scott three lengths away third. Garment was fourth and the others beaten off.

The winner, a six-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from Incognito, was the extreme outsider of the'field.

Leighnor was backed down to a short price in the Halswell Hack Handicap, being £lB3 better fancied than Wild Coon, but tho former missed the jump out and lost several lengths at the start. Symbol was first to break the line, but after a furlong had been covered Philibun ran to the front and led Symbol, Lord Midas, Big Joe, and Wild Coon. This was still the order turning into the straight, where the favourite ran up on the outside. At the distance Philibun was done with, and Symbol, Lord Midas, and Wild Coon singled themselves out for an interesting struggle home. They finished in that order, a length between each, with the favourite three lengths further back, then followed Sweet Mystery and Philibun. The winner is a three-year-old ’arown filly by Gascony from Symballo.
