April- 25. , Upwards of 50 ‘ police had a pense- r tional encounter with a murderer aft Wollongong to-day, culminating in the loss of three lives, the victims being George Hinsby (aged 50, a crane- . driver, of Port Kembla steelworks), his wife, Amelia Hinaby, aged 45, ana Detective John Edward Dunn,. aged 36, who was only recently married. The police ascertained' that- Hinsby had a oisputei with his wife and shoft her with a rifle. The eon and the daughter, aged 17 and - 11, were Ordered out by the father, who fired a stmt after the son, but it missed.- A’ neighbour Was summoned. He also was ’ I ordered away,, but/he called- the-police ,- and several arrived, inelacKng Detective Dunn. Hinsby refnSed to allow them into the house, and pointed a rifle, causing them to' withdraw. t ‘ The police surrounded the honae'and kept a large crowd at a safe distaince. They requisitioned tear gas and extra . police from Sydney, the\jatter arriving in a couple of hoars. Tlie police then ’ ■ began firing rifles and revolvers/.into " the house, calling noon Hinsby to .snr- . render. Suddenly Dqnn fell ■ dead on /■;■ the footpath, shot- through the fore- ■ / head. The body was quickly removed , from view. . .s Eventually; a couple of police crept! to, the Side of the house and neered through a window. Thcv .saw Hinsby lying dead on a bed with the rifle m his hand. , Apparently he had committed suicide after a- siege which lasted for three hours. The wife’s body wts found on the kitchen floor.
