SUPERANNUATION PAYMENTS
COUNCIL EMPLOYEES' POSITION PROVISION MADE COVERING HARDSHIP INDIVIDUAL CASES MET OH MERITS Payment of superannuation contributions of those employees of the council who are serving with the Special Force was a subject again under discussion at the meeting of the City Council last night, and particularly those cases where the employees’ military pay and allowances exceeded the increased maximum laid down by the council. The Finance Committee reported that the proposals adopted by the council were subject to review in June, and that no action should be taken meantime. Cr Taverner said that the allowances were £1 for single men and £1 10s for married men, with a maximum earning of £6 from all sources. To show the difficulties that faced the council, he said that one employee had made application for the superannuation payment. Ho was at the time drawing £7 10s. His civil pay with the council had been £5 10s. To alleviate actual hardship through enlistment was the object of the payments, said Cr Taverner. The whole question would be reviewed in June — after being in operation for six months. So far, he concluded, there had been no cases where there would have been any hardship. Cr M'Millan said he was very disappointed over the recommendations concerning one employee, who said that because he had five children ho received no benefit. ■ He considered his superannuation should be paid. He moved as an amendment that the scheme be further considered. Cr Cameron thought that the man would be getting more from military pay than ho would in the cpuncil’s employ. He thought every case should be considered on its merits, when he was certain that cases of hardship would be given generous consideration. The amendment was lost, but it was decided to give further consideration to the scheme when it was subject to review in June.
