MINES TO REOPEN
THE HOLIDAY PAY DISPUTE MINISTER’S THREAT TO TAKE OVER [Peb United Press Association.] GREYMOUTH, February 12. Idle since January 24 through the holiday pay dispute, the Dobson coal mine will resume operations on Wednesday. The Wallsend mine, which also has been idle since January 22 in connection with the same dispute, will also resume at an early date, probably this week. The Grey Valley Workers’ Union and the Brunner Miners’ Union will meet-to-morrow to discuss the arrangements for resumption. So far none of the 400 men affected by the dispute has been placed on public works, though possibly a number have accepted other employment since both companies gave notice that the mines would be closed indefinitely. WELLINGTON, February 12, The Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, announced! tb-day that, if the production of coal is not resumed at the Dobson and Wallsend mines, he will not hesitate to recommend the Government to take over and work the mines under the war emergency powers.
