PRICE CONTROL
POSITION OF TRADERS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEMORANDUM The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce has issued the following memorandum in regard to prices of goods offered for sale to the public.:- ■ ‘ 1 ;. “ A Certain amount of misconception still appears to exist on the part of traders in respect of Government control of prices of goods and services. Under the Prevention of Profiteering Act, traders were allowed, prior to the war, to increase prices provided they gave notice to the authorities of such increases. Upon the outbreak of war tbe Government issued the' Price Stabilisation Emergency Regulations, 1989; under date of September 1, under which prices for goods and services were anchored to the level of those ruling on September 1, and which prescribed that no increases , in prices could be made without specific authority havinjj first been obtained from an official tribunal established by the Government, “ Under date of December 20; 1939, the Control of Prices Emergency Regulations, 1939, were issued. These last-named regulations, which are of » comprehensive nature, should remove any misconception which may still exist as to the obligations of traders in the matter of price increases. . “ Offences and .penalties' are pre-; scribed in the regulations, and it_i»important for all traders to be familjaf. with the terms of the. regulations.” > .
