‘STAR’ CENTENNIAL NUMBER

Out Next Saturday Story of New Zealand's Growth Told by Many Pens and Great Gallery of Artists . The Centennial Number of the ‘Evening Star * will be published on Saturday next, February 17, which is the opening day of the Otago celebrations. This supplement, which will be detachable from the body of the newspaper and complete in itself, will be something more than a conventional, more or less formal, record of New Zealand s doMelopment. In addition to the central story, tracingfliis country’s progress from the days of the moa and Maori to the present time, with reference to early settlement, politics, industries, art, and literature, the aspect and manners of successive periods are shown as they appeared to the eyes of those contemporary with them, either New Zealanders who recorded them later, or famous visitors and temporary dwellers, like Lady Barker, Anthony Trollope, the distinguished novelist, James Anthony Froude, the historian, and others. So the reader will be reminded of many departed ways and types. The descriptions of Lady Barker, whose ‘ Station Life in New Zealand * and ‘ Station Amusements in New Zealand ’ deal with the “ s sixties,” will be found as entertaining to-day as when they were written. By the method adopted it is sought to show the decades, each with its distinctive hue, in comparison and contrast ivith one another, and this object is assisted by a host of illustrations, obtained from many sources, and running to more than two hundred in all. The record of pen!, pencil, brush, and camera will be published on special paper so that its illustrations may appear to the best effect. ; A supplement will be delivered free to regular subscribers serviced by our runners or country agents. Supplements will not be included with copies of the ‘ Star ’ sold in the streets.
