NO HAM SANDWICHES
That bulwark of British life, the Ham sandwich, is seriously threatened. It must shortly gp out of existence, and the railway refreshment rooms will know it no more-t-at least for some time. Bacon may be .rationed, and who will sacrifice a valuable j ticket merely for the sake of a sandwich f* The Caterers say that they will use beef as ft substitute. But there can, be no real substitute for the ham sandwich, which has, reigned almost supremo for over 100 years. Tradition says that the sandwich was invented by the Earl of Sandwich, who wanted a quick, meal which would not take him from the delights of the gaming table. Be that, as it may, the sandwich has iplayfed no .vnall part in our national life, and though in these advanced times there are many kinds of sandwiches, hani has always been our first thoughts whenever these.useful delicacies have been mentioned.
