SERIOUS CHARGE
ALLEGED ATTACK ON YOUNG WOMAN REMAND GRANTID Whbn Albert Edward May (26) appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Police Court to-ray charged! with assault with intent to commit rape, De-tective-sergeant Hall, who prosecuted, said that the accused was arrested yesterday He asked for a remand until December 14, and stated! that five witnesses would be called.
Mr O. G. Stevens, appearing for the accused, agreed to the remand, and asked for bail.
To the magistrate, Mr Hall said that a young woman went through Newington ■, Avenue about 2.30 p.m. on November 9. She was allegedly grabbed by the accused, thrown down a bank, and very seriously assaulted. She was unconscious for some time, and it was alleged that the accused! ran away, it being only with difficulty that the young woman was able to struggle to her home, hospital treatment being necessary. The accused was remanded until December 14, bail being refused.
