SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREIG SHIELD TO KIWI O'DRISCOLL'S FAST HUNDRED Splendid racing and fast times, made the second carnival in connection with the Otago senior, intermediate, and junior swimming championships at the Municipal Baths last night the most enjoyable of the series, the performances generally indicating that Otago will be well represented at the national senior championship meeting at Wellington, and at the New' Zealand Centennial intermediate and junior fixture at Dunedin. FIVE TITLES TO I. PURDIE. ' There were several outstanding performances in the senior division, and Islay Purdie, of the Kiwi Club, repeated her fine performance of last year by carrying off five titles—the 100, 220, and 440yds ladies’ free style, and 100yds and 200 metres back stroke. Winning the 100yds ladies’ back stroke title in 85 3-ssec, she came out a few events later to swim over the distance to retain her 220yds ladies’ free style championship in 2min 65 3-ssec, her winning margin being 30yds. Just as Miss Purdie was so outstand-, ing-in the ladies’ division, so J. D. O’Driscoll, of the Dunedin Club, returning to competition after a spell from serious racing during the last year or ti*o, showed that he is not far short of his best form by winning the 100yds in the smart time of 53 4-ssec, this, marking his third title success at the meeting. O’Driscoll came out later in the evening, with J. Durand (St. Clair) as his partner, to retain the 100yds life saving championship, and capped off an excellent night’s work ’with a fast lap in the 200yds six-a-side •relay, which enabled his team to retain possession of the Olds Challenge Shield, which provided an exciting finale to the meeting, Dunedin’s winning time being Imin 44sec. O’Driscoll is entered for the 440yds free style championship on Monday night, so that he will be afforded the opportunity_of bringing his title successes to five. He has improved wth every race, and there is. no doubt that from 100yds to 440yds especially, he should be a prominent competitor at the senior national meeting in Wellington. While these two were outstanding in their particular branches of swimming, W. H. Dyson and Winnie Dunn (Kiwi) stood out for the brilliance of their performances in the breast stroke events. Dyson secured his second title when he had a swim-over in the 220yds nien’s breast stroke in 3min 1 1-ssi;p, only one second outside his own national’ record, and the fastest time in which an Otago championship has ever been won. As a matter of fact, Dyson and J. C. W. Davies are the only swimmers in New Zealand who have bettereo last night’s time, and it was surpringly good swimming for so early in the season. . Miss Dunn’s performance in adding the 100yds to the furlong breast stroke title she won on Tuesday night was almost equally impressive, for she won easiy in 85 4-ssec, 1 4-ssec outside her own national record.

1 FIFTH DIVING QHAMPIONSHIP. Although Miss Gwen Rix (Dunedin) in the ladies’ diving championship had no opposition, the national champion again dived well to register her fifth successive provincial title success, D. Freeman (Kiwi), in taking the men s championship, scoring his fourth consecutive win, also with a good display. So far as the intermediate section was concerned, the displays represented an advance on those of Tuesday night, and Rita Smith (Kaikorai)holder of the New Zealand intermediate girls’ championship, dived well up to form in the second section (voluntary dives) to_ win her third Otago intermediate title from Mavis Strong (Kiwi), who also per•fonned promisingly in her first appearance in the intermediate division. The , .only competitor in the intermediate ‘ boys’ section was J. Stewart (Kiwi), . who contested his first championship. Showing more confidence than in the "first section, he gave an improved display. BROTHER AND SISTER WIN. The’ intermediates registered several good swimming performances, and a notable feature of this class was the 4 success of brother andl sister, _ both • former holders of’New. Zealand junior titles, in the breast stroke events. Bob Peat (Kiwi), who won the Dominion junior hoys’ oreast stroke championship at Nelson in 1938, scored a win over big cluhmate, H. Newall, in the 100yds : breast stroke event in 87sec after re- ' turning 85 l-6sec for his beat, and Noeline Peat, winner of the New Zealand junior girls’ breast stroke title at Rotorua in January, signalised her appearance in intermediate ranks with an " impressive performance to win a, fine lace in 65 l-ssec after returning 64 4-osec in her heat. Miss Peat was well extended by Miss Clarke (Dunedin), who finished third in the New Zealand intermediate event at Rotorua' last - year, but Miss Peat’s determined finish carried the day. ' ■ Easily the outstanding free style competitor was Colin Sell (Kiwi), who is ■another swimmer just emerged from junior ranks. Sell has more than fulfilled last year’s promise, and winning the 220yds intermediate boys’ free style : championship in 2min 48 2-ssec, scored his third title success from his clubmate,' W. J. Booth, who has also been a consistent performer at the' meeting. - Both hoys are possessed of proficient styles, and Sell should be a strong contender for New Zealand honours. Betty Reid (Kiwi) scored her second ‘ win with a swim-over in the 220yds_ intemediate girls’ free style championship in slow time. JUNIOR’S TREBLE. A. Main (Zenith) Was another triple winner, adding the 75yds junior boys’ hack stroke championship to his two free style successes. Although he had 'a swim-over, Main was timed in 65sec, quite a sound effort, and he stood out above the rest of the competitors among the junior hoys. . . ' Ngaire Lane (Kiwi) was a dual winner, following up her success in lowering the Otago junior girls’ 50yds record by winning the 100yds junior girls free style championship from the title'holder, A. Smith, in the good time of 76 4-ssec. This race carried with it the Nawi Kira Shield, which was subsequently presented to the winner by the president of the Otago Centre (Mr W. -A-. Jenkins). - . ■. With only four events to be decided, >the Kiwi Glub is assured of possession of'the Alex. Greig Shield (for the most points *in senior, intermediate,, ■ and ■junior-divisions) -for the fourth successive year, and the points < after last »night’s carnival were: Kiwi 206 1 Dunedin 50.
