The mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) re* turned on" Saturday from Wellington, where he attended the opening of the Centennial Exhibition. Sir Lindo Ferguson returned on Saturday from a short visit to Wellington. The Rev. H. A. Mitchell left this morning for Christchurch to attend the Presbyterian General Assembly. Mr A. E. Ansell and Mr W. L. Passmore left this morning for Wellington. Mr P. Neilson, M.P., and Hon. M« Connelly, M.L.C.. returned on Saturday from Wellington. Mr W. R. Clarke left this morning for Wellington. The Rev. H. J. Ryburn left to-day for Christchurch. . . Many congratulations were received to-day by Mrs Margaret Auld, of. 9 Lambert street, who is celebrating her ninety-sixth birthday. A remarkably well preserved lady, Mrs Auld is still in full possession of all her faculties, and has a remarkable memory of happenings of the past. She arrived in Dunedin on November 80, 1857. Relatives and friends forgathered in Lambert street to-day, the home being the seen® of jovous celebration. ... __ , Cable advice was received in Wellington to-day that Flight-officer lan St John Beere, of the 51st Bombing Squadron, R.A.F., was killed while night flying on November 8. Flyingofßcer Beere, who was 26 years old,, was the only on of Colonel R. St. J, Beere, solicitor, of Wellington, and Mrs Beere, who is doing war work at a hospital in Devon.—Press Association.
