GOLF CHAMPIONS

THE OPEN TITLE Kino AND M’INTDSH IN THE LEAD YESTERDAY’S PLAY AT MIRAMAR [Peu United Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, November 10. With an amateur and a professional leading the field at the end of the second day’s play in the New Zealand Open Golf Championship and several other prominent players having moved up to within promising positions, the tournament at Miramar has reached an interesting stage. The weather was again extraordinarily unkind to-day. A northerly wind, of gale force at times, harassed the players at nearly every point on the links and upset the most orthodox shots. The wind played strange tricks with both long and short play. At one stage it Caused a drive to sail away on a fantastic line, while later it caused the easiest of putts to lip the hole or even to carry on feet past. The sky was cloudless, and . but for the wind many better scores would have been returned . AN OUTSTANDING ROUND. The outstanding round of the tournament so far was that of A'. R. Kitto, who went round in 72. He was out_ in 38, after taking three 1 putts : at the eighth and ninth. At the tenth and eleventh Kitto failed to reach the green with his second, but played a magnificent chip shot to be down in one putt. He went through the green at the twelfth, but recovered well to sink- a putt Kitto won the Seafield_Clnb s Championship this year and the Wanganui Provincial Championshp last yeS-T-He was a finalist in, the New Zealand Amateur Championship in 1937 < In equal place at the top is the unattached professional J I) Mln tosh, who. after a brilliant 74 yesterday, continued on bis winning way to-dav to return 75—38 out and 37 home.. M.lntosh showed to-day the variety of shots and coolness aTid resource .that won him the professional title of New Zealand in 1926 and 1927. Steadiness was the keynote of his golf to-day. J P Horn a brook would probably have broken 70 if he had had any hick with his putts. He was out in par 37 and only missed an eagle 3 at the eleventh, where his No. 2 iron shot finished 6ft past the pm. Even so he got a birdie four. At the short sixteenth he played a magnificent jow iron shot, but was unlucky in missing a 6ft putt for a birdie two. A fluffed second at the eighteenth robbed him again of a birdie. He caxno home in 36, . W. B. Reilly, who seldom does a-oad round, - enhanced his reputation for steady golf by finishing with 74. Those who saw him battling against rax Smith in the amateur final at Balmacewen last year noticed to-day that he played his shots with confidence and s tyle_even better generally than m 1938. ‘ . „„ , , A. J. Shaw was out m 37 and home in 38—sound play under the execrable conditions. , . , ... A. Murray’s direction and putting were rather ; disappointing. He got into a bunker at the eighteenth with his second, "but exploded out to within two feet of the pin, and finished with a bogey 4.-He waa, out■ in 40 and bomb in 39. J--i; . R. H. Glading took 43 for the first nine, dropping two strokes at the second and fifth holes and three at the eighth. He missed par figures at onlv one hole on the liomeward .journey. George Watt took 40 on the outward journey, including three putts on four greens, but he struck his best form coming home, finishing two under par. “ Pax.” Smith . was out in 38, but four putts at the eighteenth because of the wind put him down to 81. B. M. Silk played very evenly to finish the first nine in 36,. but his 41 coming in can be attributed to the adverse conditions. K. Smith, aged 17, the youngest competitor at the tournament, returned a scratch 37 out, hut dropped strokes at the long fifteenth and- the short sixteenth brought him up to 41 for the second nine. H. R. Blair faced up to the adverse conditions by turning on several holes over scratch, but, like E. S'. Douglas, of Otago, he missed on many shots which, but for the wind, would have even bettered scratch. P. Quinn, who was going well yesterday, struck a bad patch, on the penultimate, his second nine taking 44. B. J. Smith, jun. (Invercargill), and J. Jeffery (New Plymouth) were other prominent players whose game suffered because-of the adverse weather. All with scores over ](35 in the first two rounds will not play in the final rounds of the open. THE SCORES.
