[ I'HOM OUK CoHIMISI'ONUIiNT.] PERSONAL. The death took place in Dunedin yesterday alter a fairly long illness of Mr John Henry Hay, aged -12 years, of Kaitangata. 'file deceased was very popularly known, not only in his home town, but in South Otago, where he was a prominent bowler, past president of Kaitangata Club, and member of the South Otago Bowling Centre. He was also secretary of tnc Kaitangata Dairy Company and the Kaitangata Coal Company, a position ho held for some years. Other organisations in the town also had his support, and much regret is felt at his passing. The oldest surviving early settler of Balclntha, Mrs John Low, will celebrate her ninety-second birthday on Friday. Mrs Low was a member of the well-known Aysou family, was born in Glenshee, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with her parents when six years of age. Although seriously ill some time ago, she lias made a remarkable recovery and is looking forward to the birthday gathering on Friday. ; MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. The Balclutba M.R'.C. held the weekly shoot last night. Top score off the rifle was put on' by H. Sinclair, a “ (possible ”, (SO), and he annexed the A grade button. He was closely followed by J. B, '.-Archer gave an interesting address on :d. Safety: First,’ and was accorded a : -vote of thanks. Next week the division will commence new classes and lectures on first aid and home nursing, while senior members will be addressed by the Health Department’s inspector on ‘Sanitation.’ BRASS BAND BALL. The Balclutha Brass Band bald, a successful ball in the Britannia Theatre last night. The music was supplied by Hill’s Orchestra. The M.C.s (Messrs Ben .Gold and P. Deaker) carried out theiri duties well and~an enjoyable time was spent. A ladies’ oommittpe provided supper. The tables were artistically decorated -with flowers, while evergreens played a prominent part around the supper'room. The committee, of which Mr J. P. Lyall was president and Mr Bowie secretary, is to be congratulated on the success of the function.

SOUTH OTAGO COURSING CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the above was held last night. Mr Jas. Gold presiding. The secretary of the Dunedin Club forwarded dates of meetings to be held, and it was decided to make an endeavour to secure entries. The secretary also uolified that the Clutha Club could have September 9 for the Maiden Stake and Gold Memorial Shield, the events postponed from last month owing to some misunderstanding. It was decided to accept this date, the same arrangements as previously to hold good. Nominations will close on September 6. Several dog owners wrote regarding the meeting, and judging by the inquiries made, dogs from Southland, Ohai, Dunedin, and elsewhere are likely to be present. BALCLUTHA COURT. Mr H. <l. Dixon, S.M., presided at. the .monthly sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Judgment by default was given in the following cases : —-South Otago Hospital Board v. James A. Stewart (Milton), claim £SO, costs £4 5s , fid; Wilson Elliott Ltd. v. A. F. Allan (Wanaka), claim £ll 11s 4d, costs £2 18s; same v. 11. M. Sullivan (Dunedin), claim £3 18s, costs 25s fid; D. M. Henderson v. E. Johnston, claim £F, costs ids; J. H. Stevenson Ltd. v. F. H. Glover (Waiwera), claim £33 19s, costs £4 5s fid. Thomas Barr (Owaka) claimed £39 Ss from W. J. Fahey on a judgment summons. The defendant" was ordered to pay the amount due, with costs, in default 40 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if the debtor paid £3 a month.

For exceedin'* the speed limit H. Kaliil (Dunedin) was fined 30s, with 10s costs; A. C. Spittle (Gore) 30s, 10s costs; Eric Root (Invercargill) 20s, costs 10s; C. T. Turnbull (Dunedin) ordered to pay 13s 6d costs; H. Burns (Timaru) 10s, 3s 6d costs; Walter St. Omer Hermann (Dunedin 1 convicted and ordered to pay 25s costs. • For driving a tractor . without a motor driver’s license T. H. L. Batting (Balclutha) for failing to give way to traffic on his right was fined 30s, with 10s costs. David Cook (Awamangu), for failing to carry a warrant of fitness in respect to a trailer, was fined 5s without costs.

R. W. Mason (Balclutha). charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a dog by wounding it with a pea rifle, and also with discharging a pea rifle on the main highway at Balclutha North, was convicted and fined £2. with 10s costs, on the first charge, and convicted and discharged on the second charge. Defendant said the dog had annoyed him and he fired the rifle to frighten' it. BALCLUTHA SWIMMING CLUB. The annual report of the Balclutha Amateur Swimming Club discloses a very successful year. Remarkable results were achieved, due to the wholehearted support of public and members. The membership was; Ladies, senior 15, senior men 54, intermediate girls 20, boys 18, junior girls 46, boys 52, honorary members 25; total 230, compared with 130 the previous year. The club held the championship events, George Lain winning men’s senior, Edith Clark girls’ intermediate, M. Willyams boys’ intermediate. R. Wyber junior hoys’, P. Middleditch junior girls’, M, Willyams diving. Lifesaving activities were carried out at Kaka Point,,while weekly competitions and a “ Learn to Swim Week ” were also conducted. Two successful carnivals were held, while members took part in a number of outside carnivals, being very successful. Members won the Evan’s Life Saving Cup, while H. A. Laing won the senior men’s breast stroke championship at the country club’s carnival. The country club’s championships will be held at Balclutha next year. A donation of £lB 4:s was received from the Finegaml Workers’ Union.
