FORGERY IN PRISON
CHARGE AGAINST CONVICT THE ISLE OF WIGHT CASE Frees Association— By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 21. ‘ (Received August 22, at 10.5 a-.m.) An Isle of Wight message states that Horace Stone, a convict at Parkhurst prison, was committed for trial on a charge of forging bank notes. It was stated in evidence that the prison authorities found photographic material in Stone’s cell, also negatives and prints of 10 shillings and pound notes. Frederick Caplin, a warder, was fined £5 for conveying photographic material into the gaol. It was stated that he kept Stone supplied with hypo and paper.
[A message received on July 31 stated: The police unearthed an astounding forgery of pound notes by convicts in Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight. A convict employed where incoming prisoners were photographed, stole a lens, plates, and sensitised paper, with which he forged notes in the prison workshop and smuggled them out with the.assistance of a prison employee who was not a convict. Several of the notes were passed in local shops. A search of the cells revealed bundles of notes.]
