NOT A CENTENNIAL MEMORlAL.—Strikingly reminiscent of the conception most persons have had in their minds’ eye of the coloured fountain proposed as a Centennial memorial, a cascade of water over 40ft high played for a quarter of an hour in Cumberland street just outside the ‘Star ’ Office this morning, when a fire plug got out of the control of its examiners. All that was needed to complete the illusion was colour, but this, too, was provided at the tip of the spout, where flung spray was given rainbow effect by the sun. It was a picturesque spectacle while it lasted, this unique waterspout that rose and fell in leaping jets of sparkling water six inches in diameter at its forceful base, but it was too short-lived for the crowds of delighted spectators who arrived seemingly from nowhere on short notice. If it served no useful purpose, the demonstration illustrated graphically the splendid water service at the disposal of the local fire brigade.
