STRASSBURG CATHEDRAL
The steeple that rises on one of the towers above the lace work-pink cathedral of Strassburg is this year five centuries old. It was on June 24, 1439, that the great cathedral was declared completed and formally dedicated. Its spire, 446 ft high, made it the highest cathedral in the world until the middle of the nineteenth century. Celebrations to commemorate the fifth centenary have just been held. Three days were devoted to the spire, with fireworks and illuminations.
