UNION OF TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILDS
The monthly meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild was held on Tuesday evening in First Church Hall. The president, Mrs R. S. Black, oeupied the chair.
The meeting was called lor the business of registering members for service in the event of a national emergency. The guild is incorporated as a section of the Medical and PublicHealth Department of the Emergency Precautions Scheme, Dunedin branch. Mr James A, Jenkins, controller of the Medical and Public Health Committee, addressed the meeting. He gave a most interesting talk on the work aimed at by the department for the care and protection of the people should a war or any other catastrophe, such as earthquake, flood, or fire, fall with devastating effect upon our city and country. He explained that many committees were working under one central scheme, and that care was taken to avoid over-lapping and misdirected energy. The Townswomen's Guild would render most valuable assistance if it would undertake to provide volunteer help of a non-medical character. There was a need at the moment for helpers to do the necessary work of cooking and taking charge of stores in emergency camps and hospitals. Mrs Porteous proposed _ a vote of thanks to Mr Jenkins, which was carried by general acclamation. Mr Herbert, of Herbert’s Service Station Ltd., kindly offered to give instruction in motor car servicing to members who have motor car certificates, and are willing to give such service when called upon. Many members were enrolled for emergency work, and for membership of Mr Herbert’s, class. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs Black to Mr Herbert for so kindly offering his time and help. At the close of the meeting a light supper was served.
