—Ministerial.— The Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple), Mrs Semple, and his private secretary (Mr J. W. Nissen) arrived in Dunedin yesterday from the north. Mr Semple’ was inet at the railway station and welcomed by the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) and also the district engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr P. ’Keller). Mr Semple left for the south this morning, and this afternoon officiated at the opening of the new bridge at Mataura. He will return to Dunedin on Sunday evening, and on Monday morning will go north. During his stay in Dunedin the Minister has no public business to transact.

Mr W. E. C. Reid was a passenger for Christchurch by to-day’s express. Mr John Lang left this morning for Christchurch.

Mr H. J. Buck left to-day on his return to Wellington. i v Mr T. Elliott was a passenger for Christchurch by the express this morning.

Mr Stewart Glendining went to Timaru by to-day’s express. Mr R. D. Thomson has been appointed to the position of manager of the D.I.C. at Wellington, and Mr S. M. Burnside has been appointed assistant manager of the same branch of the firm.

At the meeting of the Taieri County Council yesterday the clerk (Mr S. Riach) presented the chairman (Cr Geo. Stevenson) with a gavel made from a piece of wood of the old Balclutha bridge. In accepting the gift, the chairman complimented Mr D. Ash on his workmanship. Dr Frederick Staton, D.Mus., F.R.C.0., L.R.A.M., conductor of the Sheffield Philharmonic Society, who is to conduct the examinations in New Zealand this year for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, is due to arrive at Auckland from Canada on Monday. He will stay in New Zealand for six months.

The long association of the late Mr John Logan with the Taieri County Council as clerk and treasurer was referred to yesterday, when- Cr C. Findlay handed to the council from Mrs Logan a framed photograph of her late husband.

At the meeting of the Taieri County Council yesterday the chairman referred to the death of Cr W. K. Kirk. A motion of appreciation of the late councillor’s services was carried, and the clerk was instructed to convey a message of sympathy to Mrs Kirk and family. The Wellington Presbytery, at a special meeting yesterday, sustained a call to the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, minister of St. John’s Presbyterian Church,, from Scots Church, Adelaide, South. Australia. The call was placed in the hands of Mr Blanchard, who accepted it. He will leave Wellington for Adelaide at the end of August. The moderator fDr I. W. Of recent years he had resided in Waitati. Deceased, who was in his seventy-ninth year, is survived i by his wife and two sons, both ot Dunedin.
