The twin screw passenger and cargo motor liner Sobieski, which lias been built at the Neptune works of Swan, Hunter, and Wigham Richardson Ltd., for the Gdynia-America Shipping Lines Limited, Warsaw, recently completed her trials off the Tyne, a speed of 17 knots being easily obtained. She has been specially designed to meet the increasing demands of her owners’ regular monthly service between Gdynia, Boulogne, and the East Coast of South America, and is equipped with the most modern arrangements for the comfort of passengers both im cold and tropical climates. Her principal dimensions are length, 512 ft; breadth, 67£ft; gross measurement, 11,500 tons; and deadweight capacity 7,200 tons. REOPENED YARDS IN GERMANY. The Stettiner Vulkanwerft A.G., which was closed down in 1930 under the rationalisation scheme for German shipyards, has lately reopened, and l the first"order, on ice-breaker for local service. has been received. The yard was established in 1851. and the last launch there was that of the N.D.L. motor ship Trnve, in 1927. POLISH SHIPPING PLANS, According to a report from Warsaw, the Polish Government intends to provide further assistance for the shipping industry. It will take the form of longterm loans, and will be available both for the construction of new tonnage and for the acquisition of second-hand! vessels. The credit may extend to 60 per cent, of the value for ships built at Polish yards. If second-hand ships aro over 10 years old, a credit up to 40 per cent, will be available. At the beginning of April last the Polish merchant fleet comprised 172 ships of 113,676 tons gross and 62,673 tons net. Eleven units of about 36,300 tons were under construction, nine of which will enter service this year. The actual increase in the Polish fleet during the first quarter of the year was six vessels of 10,008 tons gross which were bought abroad, and more than compensated for the sale of the Polonia, of 7,500 tons, to ship-breakers. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Surrey will load at New York on September 16 for main New Zealand ports, and is due at Auckland on October 18, and here on November 2.
