GERMAN SUBMARINES
PART PLAYED IN SPANISH WAR 1 ADMIRAL RAEDER'S PRAISE , Prc*s Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Juno 10. A reference by Grand-Admiral Raeder, the Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, to the activity of two German submarines in Spain, is taken in London as an admission that German submarines were employed in attacking Spanish merchantmen during the civil war.
Admiral Raeder, in a speech to the German Spanish legionaries, to whom he and Field-Marshal Goering had presented medals, said: “With special recognition, my thoughts turn to the two special submarines and their crews who in a splendid manner solved an especially difficult task. “ They had the responsible duty or preventing wherever possible ah expansion of the conflict to other nations. This, perhaps, was more difficult than open participation, which was not compatible for them as representatives of the German Reich.” Later Admiral Raeder mentioned the U 33 and U 34 as having “carried out a difficult task with great keenness.” German newspapers stated that the crews of these submarines would participate in the parades of the returned legionaries.
