THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE [l’ek United I‘hess Association.J CHRISTCHURCH, April 9. The South Island annual conference and competitions of the Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies of New Zealand began in Christchurch yesterday. Mr R. J. Hampton, president of St. Mary’s, welcomed the delegates and formally handed over the chair to the president of the South Island Executive (Mr G. D. O’Connell). While the conference was in session teams representing the various Catholic Clubs debated the question of whether Britain’s policy of appeasement would -result in world peace. Fourteen teams competed, the session lasting all day. Early yesterday afternoon delegates and competitors were accorded an official welcome by Bishop Brodie. This was followed bv a civic reception led by Mr G. Manning. About 100 players from all parts of the South Island are also participating in lawn tennis competitions.
