GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
SURPRISE IN SECOND ROUND WIGHT'S FINE PERFORMANCE SATURDAY'S PLAY The second day of the Otago amateur championship tournament was again all that could be dcsil-cd as far as, conditions go. The course was in almost perfect order, and the result was some very interesting golf. The afternoon play produced in the nature of a surprise in the first match, when T. W. Wight beat A. Gibbs, who was a hot favourite, 3 and 2. Wight played the first nine holes in 33, giving a very convincing display. Gibbs won the first hole, and Wight squared the score at the sixth, leading all the way. The other matches all showed very close finishes. There was nothing between Ferguson and Scouler all the way round except that the breaks were not coming Scouler’s way. He was stymied three times in the round. The quality of the golf is shown by the fact that Sconler was round in level 4’s and Ferguson one over 4’s. Tyrrell and Lawrence, too, had a match that provided good golf right up to the last hole. They were all square at the turn, and all square again, playing Roy’s. Tyrrell won that hole, they halved the fifteenth, and a win to Tyrrell at the short sixteenth left him dormie 2.
Trewern and Clayton both played golf that was good at times, but very patchy. A match which had fluctuated consistently ended in Trewern’s favour 1 up. As was the case on Friday the handicap competition played in the afternoon was notable for exceptional scoring. It was a Stablcford, and J. R. H. Caiman won it with a card reading 28—-16—44, perhaps the best score ever returned in a Stablefqrd at Balmacewon. Saturday’s results were as follows; OTAGO AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP —First Round.— i A.
