HOLIDAY ANGLING

STREAMS IN GOOD ORDER BRIGHT PROSPECTS IF WEATHER CLEARS Possibly no section of the community is scanning the weather reports with more interest and concern at present than. anglers, for whom the more lengthy break than usual from business during the holidays provides an opportunity to indulge in the sport of which Isaak Walton says,_ “ ’Tis full of pleasure, void of strife, and ’tis beloved by many ... breeds no ill, but content and pleasure,” Reports from various places received by the secretary of the Otago Anglers’' Association indicate that generally the rivers and streams are in fairly good order for fishing. Some of the reports give hope, in fact, that if the weather cleared the prospects for holiday fishing would be better than for some years. From Palmerston the' association a f; informant writes: “Recent rains have given the Shag River agreat- clean out. The river is still carrying a good head of water. There has been a good deal of fresh from the sea, a number of fresh sea run trout having been taken. With good weather the Shag will be in better condition for the holidays than it has been for many years. Have no hesitation in informing brethren that condition of river is perfect.” The correspondent at Oamaru writes; “ The’ Waitaki River is in excellent order and prospects for the holidays are good. Feed is running, in large quantities. The Kakanui River is also in good order at present, and is carrying a good deal of water as a result ot recent rains. A further heavy rain will not improve matters. The Ahuriri River is in excellent order and prospects are good. As a reminder-to anglers, the length of fish permitted from this river and its tributaries is 15in. The Habataramea River is carrying a good deal of snow water, and ■ prospects for the holidays are not bright there.” . From Tapanui the report is: The river is in great order and_ fish are plentiful, but weather conditions have prevented any bags of quantity being taken. Fish are in good condition, and if present conditions prevail Ijshing over the holidays should be better than for many past seasons.” The Geraldine correspondent of the association writes; “ There has been plenty of rain here. Rivera are full, but fishable except for an odd day or _ two. There is a fair stock of takeable small fish in most streams, and the condition of the fish is good. The best small streams are the upper and lower Orari, Ohapi Creek, and Cooper's Creek. The reports from the Opihi are not very good, but the spawning run of brownies should be moving into the lower reaches now. Lakes Clearwater and Emma much fished with fair results—all brownies there.” “ All streams are at present on the high side.” reports Balclutba. “and only the Kaihika and the Glenomaru are fishable with fly. All_should be in frond order bv week-end if rain keeps off.”
