WOOL FDR UNITED STATES TRADE TREATY DISCUSSIONS As the result of exploratory discussions with the United States for a trade treaty, unofficial information has reached Canberra that there is the strongest likelihood that the Government of the United States will be prepared to grant a substantial reduction in the ipresent heavy .duty on Australian wool. It is known that a vital part of the negotiations is centring in tho question of the wool duty, and a substantial concession on wool would undoubtedly be far more important and valuable’ than the aggregate of all other concessions which the Australian Government is seeking. While American duties on Australian wool vary according to quality, they range up to about Is 9d a pound for scoured wool and approximately 9d a pound for greasy wool in Australian currency. These duties are so large that they have always been a serious barrier to American competition at the wool sales, although two years ago America purchased considerable quantities of wool. On that occasion the wool purchases converted the total balance of trade between the two countries into one favourable to Australia for the first time in history.
