| From Ouk Bauxl-tha. Correspondent.] PERSONAL. A very pleasant progressive whist evening was held at the residence of Mrs A. L. Shepard, Clyde street, Balclntha, on Tuesday night, when members of the Balclutha Girl Guide Committee met to entertain Miss Hazel Wallace, who has resigned. Miss Wallace was for some years secretary of the committee prior to being elected to that body. During the course of a happv evening Miss J. Farquharson, president, asked Miss WaJllace to accept a pair of china hook ends as a mark of appreciation of her interest in Guide affairs. Musical honours were accorded the recipient, who suitably replied. BALCLUTHA FIRE BRIGADE. . On Wednesday night the members of the Balclutha Volunter Fire Brigade held the annual competitions for the cup presented by the brigade for most points. The night was fine, and some very interesting work was seen by a fair attendance of interested spectators. Despite the long grass, some excellent times were registered, and on the performances put up the members should acquit themselves creditably at the Watts Cup competitions for South Otago brigades to be held at Taipanui on Saturday. The officials for the evening were: Examiners, Supt. R, M‘Cuteheon and Mr E. Morris; starter, Mr R. Chalmers; timekeepers, Messrs P. M‘Gregor and 1. Scott; secretary, Mr J. Morris. The result was that Fireman J. C. Morris won the cup with a margin of one point from Fireman R. Stewart. Results were : Tiro-men Event.—T. Hansen and A. Stewart 1. B, Gdld and J. C. Morris and J. Reid and 0. Wyber (equal) 2, Q. Munro and substitute 3. Six pairs competed. Three-men Event. —B. Gold, R. Stewart, J. C. Morris 1, J. Reid, G. Munro, A. Stewart 2. T. Gold, A. Low, I. Stewart 3, T. Hansen, A. Stewart. O. Wyber 4.

Five-men Event.—A. Low, T. Gold, I. Stewart, R. Stewart, J. C. Morris 1, B. Gold, 0. Wyber, T. Hansen, A. Stewart, G. Munro 2. One-man Event.—l. Stewart and (R. Stewart (equal) 1. J. C. Morris 3. Eight others competed and received one cup point each.

Cup points: J. C. Morris 41, R. Stewart 40, B. Gold 36, I. Stewart 35, J. 'Reid 33, T. Hansen. A. Stewart, G. Munro 30, 0. Wvber, A. Low, T. Gold 28.

Mr Russell Chalmers has donated a handsome cup for next year’s competition, the members of the brigade greatly appreciating this gift.

BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the above was held on Wednesday night, Mr J. H. Stevenson (mayor) presiding. The Waterworks Engineer reported that the daily consumption of water was about 75,000 gallons. Letters of thanks were received from the Otago Provincial Centennial Council for donation of £72 towards the Otago court and from the Balclutha Swimming Club for donation of £2O. The Balclutha Pipe Band was granted the usual vote of £ls, an amendment that the amount be £2O being lost. Minister of Transport wrote asking council to refrain from granting further town-carrying licenses except in cases where an increase was justified, pending new regulations.—Received. Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking if council was agreeable to cooperating in setting up a district committee in connection with the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act.—Decided to co-operate. A request from the Balclutha Bowling Club to erect a fence between the green and tennis courts was referred to the Reserves Committee to report. The Secretary of the Clutha River Board wrote stating that unless specific instructions were received from the Minister controlling river areas it could do nothing in the matter of clearing willows on the north side of the river at Balclutha, and unless it received this it considered it was under no liability to advance the £SO asked for towards the work—Received. Members expressed the opinion that the work should be gone on with right away, and that money spent now would save greater expense later. The Government was willing to spend £4OO on the work if the £SO was forthcoming, and the work was urgent. Accounts amounting to £552 18s 4d were passed for nayment. A further payment of £9l Is 5d had been made to the waterworks contractor, this closing the special loan account. The debit balance at date was £1,765 16s Id. His Worship reported on the visit of the mayor, councillors, and officials of Invercargill to inspect the Balclutha water filtration scheme, aaid said the. visitors had been agreeably surprised at the effectiveness of the system. He also stated that during the month the health officer for Otago and the public works engineer had visited Balclutha and conferred with councillors regarding a proposed drainage scheme.
